The basic functions of the 705 is much the same as the 305 but there are ALOT of new goodies that will give you endless hours of fun on the bike!!

Will it actually give you time to ride the bike or just look at the pretty pictures on screen?

FYI - A feature I discovered this weeekend:

You can use your Edge 705 to navigate TO the race venue !

Zorgus - the wife was talking about us getting a GPS system for the car...

If the new 705 can do both - man - I might just be able to swing it...Big%20smile

Please explain!

Firstly the Edge705 uses the same maps as (almost) any other Garmin mapping device (nuvi, streetpilot, eTrek, Zumo etc.), so there is no difference there.

Secondly the Edge705 uses the same (+/-) auto-routing system to plan routes, and get you to your destination.

So far let's call it about equal, the main difference's are as follows:

+ Edge has heart rate, cadence, ANT+ wireless connectivity, altimeter and all the cycling specific features

- Edge uses beeps in place of voice directions (for turns etc)

- Edge does VIA points, but it's has to be done using Mapsource

Conclusion:

This is a cycling computer, that can also easily navigate you to the start of the race.

You're not going to be able to mount this on your front window to impress your friends, but it will get you to your destination.

I do not own a 705, but I have been using GPS for a few years.

Main disadvantages of the Edge 705 in a car is:

- small screen; difficult to view while driving

- no external antenna (less of an issue these days with the improved reception and firmware).

- not easy to mount (although with the 305 I got 2 handle bar brackets; could try to make a plan with one for the car).

- no voice prompts

So no topo map? I guess you need to buy that extra if you want it.

The new DEM maps sound interesting. Have not seem that yet.

Anyway, for now my 305 and/or my Etrex Legend HCx with my own topo maps loaded will have to do.

The Garmap maps are quite good on-road, the Tracks4Africa are quite good off-road,

but neither can route betwen on-road and off-road (ie from my house round Jonkershoek and back) so that's where I filled in the gap.

:-) okay, maybe not the best example.

But I have used it (for distance and time planning especially) to climb Table mountain + Lions head, and for going round places i don't know like Grabouw.

OK, for planing purposes on the PC the auto-routing is useful.

Never needed auto-routing on the bike though.
