I bought myself some mavic crossmax slr wheels a year ago.

 

Have done about 2000 k's offroad on them and they are still going strong without any problems whatsoever.

 

They are still running true and all the spokes are still tight.

 

All I have done is service and oil the freewheel hub during the year.

 

A friend told me that the crossmax nipples are a problem and that they fuse onto the hub and then you cannot get them loose.

 

Is this a general problem with these rims?

 

If it is, then what can be done to prevent this from happening ?

 

could one loosen each of the nipples and put some Grease/oil/white lightning/wd40 on the nippple and retighten the nipples again ?

 

have anybody had this problem and or fixed or prevented it from happening?

It seems this is not something that is currently happening to anybody out there.

 

Might have been a false alarm.

 

Any mechanics out there that have seen this happen ?

I have Mavic ksyriums, and my nipples have fused. (Not my nipples - the nipples holding the spokes into the rim).

 

I have waited over a month for Mavic SA to get me spare spokes and nipples, and am still waiting.

 

From what I have been told, some grease with a copper compound in it should prevent this from happening in the future...

Liquid grease as in WD40 or Q20?

You can get it at automotive spares places (it gets used on motorcycle chains).

 

It goes on thin and fizzes (bubbles) as it penetrates into the tiniest gap, but after a minute or two it turns into thick, sticky, very waterproof pink grease.

 

It's great for lubing bearings that you've cleaned the grease out of but can't force new grease into due to the very small gap between the races and the bearings. e.g. headset bearings.

Liquid grease is not oil, as both have base oil as component, but grease has a thickener as well.  It comes in a spray can, but once sprayed it thickens a bit to have the consistency of grease.  It is ideal to use in difficult to get to places (except if you take things apart) where grease is a better thing to use.  I believe that for these nipples, grease or as mentioned in previous reply, anti-seize or copper grease is used (same stuff used when working with titanium).  Grease will protect longer, but you can use oil, but will have to attend more frequently.

So if you say they have fused is that to the rim or to the spokes ?

 

If its to the rim then how on earth are you going to get new spokes and nipples onto that rim ?

Ok Ok...

 

Got myself some spanjaard liquid grease yesterday and went to work on the mtb wheels.(and everywhere else where I knew there was a bearing that needed some grease for that matter)

 

Checked each spoke and nipple and im glad to report that all of the nipples are still in very good condition and are easy to turn.

 

Put a small amount of liquid grease on each nipple, wiped off the excess and Im sure im good to go for another couple of years.

 

That spanjaard sure is good stuff, I put it on my motorbike chain as it is so easy to apply and comes out so thin that it penetrates deep into the rollers very easily and then thickens to form the grease.

 

I also sprayed it on my pedals where the bearings are and this weekend im gonna open up and go for my headset bearings and my crank bearings.

 

I might even do my wheelbearings if I have enough time....

It it ain't broke, don't fix it.

 

Your wheel bearings will be sealed cartridges, and most people don't service those - just replace if they are rough.  Ditto for crank.  If they're not rough, they don't need any attention, and if they are, no amount of cleaning and greasing is going to get them smooth again.

 

Also, Spanjaard Liquid Grease is a bit too thick and sticky for bicycle wheel bearings, IMO.

 

Since the headset doesn't rotate much at all, it could be worth patching up rough headset bearings by removing them, cleaning them in a solvent, drying them, and spraying in Liquid Grease.  For the other bearings, my advice is to leave them if they're smooth and replace them with new ones if they're rough.

Maybe wise words that i must heed.

 

Gonna let it be for now and then replace when neccessary.
