I have done some strenuous 3hr exercise on the road bike. I am at home now approximately 4 hours after the ride. My heart rate is hovering around 80bpm. My normal resting heart rate is anywhere between 48 and 55.

 

It is quoted in the scientific literature that it may take 24 hrs after strenuous exercise to return to normal bpm. However it also mentions that it can also be a dangerous sign if too high. No values whatsoever are given.

 

PS: Was slightly dehydrated during the session, having consumed roughly 1.75 litres over the 3 hour session.

 

Cause for concern?

If you're actually resting, keep an eye on it in the AM

 

Moving about, doing stuff, still active -

Heart rate, blood pressure and cortisone levels will all rise the longer you're staying awake, regardless of exercise. Resting heart rate is measured at absolute rest first thing in the morning.

Recovery curve is directly related to the intensity of training........the higher the intensity the longer it will take to recover. Also, the best time to measure resting heart rate is just after you have woken up in the morning. Use this as an indicator.......not 4 hr after training as your body is still in a state of repair and recovery compensation. A good cool down session after training (15-20min of low intensity activity) will enhance the recovery process. If however your resting heart rate stays elevated if might indicate that recovery has not occured completely, or that there might be an underlying physical condition (ie inflamation) to consider. Please consult a medical spesialist if the case.

Nah! youl'e be ok - my specs are similar and hr stays up(80) for a good number of hours.

If you have mild flu (without realising it) it will also stay up for longer.

As long as the initial drop is substantial and within a fairly short time period.
