Its the R59, take the Swartkoppies off ramp and turn right at the robots, travel straight along this road for 2/3 km, you will see the sign to Rietvlei on your right.

Holy Smoke !!

I cant believe this place still exists !! Back in the 70's they used to have school holiday camps at the place !! I just had a look at the old photo's.

There were big dorms near the gate - and they had stacks of animals from the JHB zoo and lotsa farm animals, dams to fish in (ok so now they are more like ponds) and clean rivers for building forts to catch the badies. Used to have to walk up the hill to get to the swimming pool !

To get to the camp you used to have to catch a bus at the bottom end of Loveday street in JHB, took like 2 and half hours to get there and a single decker municipal bus !! What a JOL that used to be. There were like NO houses for MILES around. The place was deep in da bush and far from town. I would have thought with all the building the place would be gone and no longer used. I could go on for hours about this place.

Awesome to here it being used for a bike park.

Wendell are the dorms still there? Do they still use it for the JHB zoo?

Hello Slowbee, Yes the dorms are there but from your posting it sounds like those buildings are now being used for a day spa, as well as Phisiotherapy practice. We utilise the thatch rondavels on the west side of the hill that can accomodate up to 66 people. I am planning a MTB training camp for 13-16 June. Will be a blast. The Zoo moved out and with it came the politics and threat of developments, but I am confident that the lease for another 16 years will halt all that and anyway 16 years on I may have passed 20 times through the rear-end of an earthworm...Planned for the farm to be an outdoor  lifestyle centre. My input is the cycling, running and walking trails an as a bonus my shop will also opperate from there.

Hi Wendell

I popped out to the farm yesterday afternoon. It as a tad to wet to ride Dead but looks like an awsome venue Tongue. I'm planning on returning on Tuesday.  What I forgot to find out is if there are changerooms?

Good luck with this venture.

Yip as you saw it was too wet last night, sorry about that Cry.

We'll be there next Tuesday again. There are toilets and I guess you could change there?

Cheers

Hi, I must admit I might have given it a go if I had something dry and warm to put on afterwards. See you there next week. Cheers Mark

Mark, you have your answer about change rooms, we will have lots more in the future........ you went there and did not ride?????? We were 6 leaving at about 6.15pm due to traffic hold ups and WOW what a lot of fun!! Are we not supposed to be able to do all terrein? It was a bit slippery but "causion" was our aproach. A few slips, slides and tumbles, but what the hek, its MTB and NO TRAFFIC. See some of you on Sunday, remember from 07h00 onwards.

A " BIG" thanks for the well wishes, after all its about the ride.
