Making the frontal roads along Ontdekkers cycle friendly

Hi, some feedback from the weekend.

I followed the advice given by all - went out early on beyers naude, then via northumberland / witkoppen to cedar and then out to the cradle.  Did a full cradle loop and ended up at riverstone lodge.

Despite googling and pre-planning my route back, i somehow couldn't find a tarred road to HPotgieter, apart from the N14 (of course).

So, after getting a bit lost, I took Beyers Naude for 5km's to Peter Rd (ie Zandspruit robot) and then cut across to HP.   It wasn't terrible but I won't do that route again.  Using the N14 for a few k's is probably safer (but illegal?).

HP was absolutely fine all of the way with a decent verge and not too hectic traffic.  Actually went all the way to ontdekkers (following some advice from another cyclist who also stopped at a red light) and then home through sophiatown and westdene. Ontdekkers was OK for a few k's.

Thanks to all for the assistance.

From Riverstone to Hendrik Potgieter the N14 is not a motorway and can be legally ridden.  North of Riverstone towards the Beyers offramp it becomes a motorway.  It can be busy but has a decent hard shoulder/yellowline.  I ride it regularly.

OK, did not know that about the N14.

Thanks very much for that very helpful info - I will use the N14 next time to get home.

Let me know when you want to go ride that way again, I'll show you the routes.

There are a few alternative ways into the Cradle to spice things up if one gets bored.

I do no have any issues on Ontdekkers road, regularly cycle on that road. Cycled it a few times also just past heavy peak hour traffic 5:30pm - 6:30pm never had any issues.

Basically stay far left as possible and stop at each red traffic light, making my intentions clear with hand signals close to the Pines intersection when moving from far left to middle left when going on straight.
