For your budget, go with:

Silverback Nabraska

Merida TFS 500

Merida SUB 60D

Felt Q720

Go with hydraulic disk brakes. Will save you a LOT of money in the future as upgrading is expensive.

Raleigh is not TOO bad in that category, but not the best either.

Schwinn can be a bit heavy.

Scott make awesome bikes, but their lower end bikes are sometimes a bit over-priced. Forget about just the frame and the name on it. Have a look at the spec and demo as many bikes as humanly possible as your final decision should come down what feels and fits best.

Yea Paul

I used to ride a Le Turbo road bike ... upgraded to a giant and i fell in love with them. But i cant get my head around the price difference of their bikes and the scott.

like I said - this is turning out to be a lot more tricky than I thought !! Convincing the Ministeress Of Finance is going to be very tricky !!

Its almost like christmas - cant wait for the weekend to go and try these bikes !!  Need to make sure the LBS has cofee and cake stations nearby for the Finance Minister - gotta keep her happy while I shop.

Umm what about 2nd hand bikes especially scott's?

i am in somerset west - so maverick cycles but their service is not great.

helderberg cycles is also close - but they dont want to talk about any other bikes other than what they have on the floor and push their bikes on you

flandria in stellenbosch - they have the raleigh i am looking at but no longer sure - he also helped me ALOT with the scott questions on the scale 70, 50 and 35 (way out my budget).

i kinda like cycle factory - but they dont have scott, but they do have giant, merida and silverback which all seem to have bikes in my range. Also they have a good cofee shop for the mrs while i try things out

Hey SlowBee,

I live in your area, and got a new bike in January. (My old one still goes fine, but is a Giant Yukon 1996 hard-nose)

I went to most of the bike shops in the area ( Somerset West x2 / Stellenbosch x2 / CapeTown x4 / Tigervalley x2 ) and what the people have mentioned above is pretty much spot on.

The best bikes for R5000-R5999 commonly found at these places were:
Giant Yukon
GT Avalanche 1
Merida TFS-100D
Merida SubXX
Scott Scale80

This price point is just about at the point of Hydraulic vs Cable disk brakes, and lower vs mid range shocks. My decision was to go one bracket up in my search as a result.

I can pm you some more details (& spreadsheet I did) if you want..

Slowbee, if you are willing to go to Durbanville for your buy, I would advise going to Willie Engelbrecht for Scott, and Geco Cycles for Giant,Schwinn, Merida, Mongoose or GT.

Willie has exceptional post sale service, while Geco really try to fit your budget, and not sell you something more expensive.

Giant's are underspecced for th eprice IMO. Talon costs R7800 for same spec as Nabraska (R6500) or TFS 500 (R6600). Giant worth extra R1k? Nope, not even close.

Was asking cause I know Cycle Factory Store has a TFS 500, SUB 60D, Nabraska and Giant Talon on the floor. Might be worth popping in to have a test drive.

I'll bid on the Silverback Nabraska - best value for money right now.

Scott's are a bit pricey.

Agreed, the Silverback stuff is definately good value for money.

The 2008 scott scale ali frame (scale 80 to scale 35) are really nice frames. Same geometry as the older frames, but a new hyrdoformed tube set. So be careful they are not tryning to palm off an old version on you:-

2008 frame: the colours change between the different model, but the frame is identical barring V-brake stud on the lower models. Note the top and down tube are not round

2007 frame: All the tubes are round with extra reinforment welded near the headtube

in that price range you need to look at merida, GT, scott, schwinn and silverback. i had a schwinn mesa for a couple of years and it was still fine when i sold it, it's just a heavy entry level bike (i replaced it with the most wonderful mongoose meteore elite, but that is way outta your budget)

when i was looking for a replacement i looked at the merida's and GT's cos they were the best value for money imho, they were all just too big for me (and then i fell in love and "bust the budget" - so prepare yourself for that possibility - start buying the mrs flowers and stuff now!)
