105 2x10 Shifting Positions

Just got my hands on a roubaix, first road bike I've owned looking to axpand my cycling exploits...

The front shifter however has 3 shifting positions on the shifter even though it only has 2 rings? Is this normal, I have to push through 2 clicks to get to the gear I want it be.  The LBS says that its supose to do that so you can move the derauler to prevent the chain from rubbing.

Also I think this is 12/27 cassette, is that an ok setup for getting into road cycling, if feels sort of like Im running out of gears on the heave climbs but I'm hoping thats mainly cause I've been spoilt for choice of gears on the Mountain Bike.

The 12/27 is probably wither a 12/25 or a 12/28. 28 is about the biggest you get on standard road cassettes, so you shouldn't be running out of gears. Check the chainrings. They should either be a 34/50 (called compact crank) or a 39/53 which is standard. Standard crank with a 28T on the back you should be able to pedal up any hills.

Regarding the shifters. Yes you can normally click "half" a click to align the derailleur.... yes the chain does rub a bit sometimes depending on which gear you are in. But the should only click that half... you should be able to jump from either chainring to the other with 1 movement.

Hope that helps.

Your front derailleur's 3 shifting positions are normal. Some campagnolo levers have 5 or 6 positions to do small adjustments. When you change gears with your rear derailleur your chain sometimes rub against the front derailleur when you are all the way to the top or bottom, then you can use the third position.

Ok great, thanks for the info... If u can make those adjutsments to the front derailleur then does that mean that cross chaining is ok... Cause i only get rub when the most extreme gears like big big and small small.

In regards to the gears ratios, i think its just cause i expected to be able to go lower with my gears in the same way i do on the mtb (i tend abuse my grany gears). Ill think ill get use to it, i already comfortably tried some heavey gradients avoiding the lowest gears.
