Recovery and Training after broken Collar bone

Agreed, that's one of the reasons for being conservative. I'm not an elite level level athlete any more and my income is not dependent on it, so while I would like to get going again, I'm certainly not going to take any risks - frustrating as it might sometimes be.

Yes, especially with that new Sukuma sitting in the garage

Can you believe I'm already doing small jumps after that proper arm break?

Most of the time it feels fine. Just religiously do my strengthening exercises and riding nearly everyday. The forearm, wrist and hand all have to get strong together.

Broke my collar bone last April. It seemed fine after a few weeks and the pain was gone. I didn't get right back on the MTB but was using it like usual. Started slowly on the road bike at Kyalami track.

The pins holding the plate to my bone started coming out, and now even after I had surgery again to remove the plate, I have a stupidly curved collar bone.. oops.

So, even if it feels 100%, give it another week or 2.

Hmm, I broke my collarbone last weekend and I am undecided as in what to do.

Strangely all South Africans (my Orthodoc, cycling friends and a sports physio) recommend the plate while all Germans I asked and showed the xrays (two orthodocs, a GP and a physio) would do conservative treatment.... how strange is that?

It's amazing how different everyone's experience is.

I had surgery and a plate, fractured in 7 places so basically no clavicle left.

I overnighted in hospital, had total mobility in shoulder when I came out of GA, was able to drive home.

On IDT after 5 days and on the road on day 15 from op, day 14 from discharge. Although I do remember hitting one bump that day that hurt like hell.

The plate is definitely the way to go. A study I read found 100% of people who have a plate regain full movement and strength as opposed to less than 50% who chose not to operate.  I didn't want to take the risk of not being able to lift above my shoulder.

It is the European way. While almost every second woman in SA has a C section in Some EU countries you really must have severe circumstances to apply for a C section not even twins is an automatic qualification.

But then again you have proper protection when it comes to time off work to recover and have proper access to the recovery doctors sphere. Ask both groups what the recommended recovery time and level of exercise during recovery is and you might find out that there is a large difference.

Well, a week and a day on since my OP and all seems to be well with the bone/plate. The problems that exist are muscular. Been to the chiropractor 2x because the muscles in my shoulder/back need some help before they pull my back out of shape, but mostly things are getting back to normal - been on the bike about 8 hours so not too bad a start. Will take it easy for a while still though

And yes, I really want to give the Morewood a workout - apart from a night race just before the accident it has been left largely alone. Want to use it for the JUMA because it will hopefully be kinder on me than the hardtail.

Glad to hear the arm is coming together nicely btw

I have had my plate in since 2007. I never got around to the pain and suffering of having it yanked out. The question is - should I ? It never hassles me or anything.

Yeah, it will also take the sting out of all the tech decents especially helpful will be the dropper post.

My ortho said that it leaving it in is no problem at all. He said he'd only suggest that I remove it if it causes me discomfort while doing things like wearing seatbelts or backpacks.

I've had it in for 2 years now, and the only issue I have is when sleeping on that side for extended periods of time, it gets a bit tender, but not unbearable.

I plan to leave mine in.
