Instead of a bolt you could turn the nut onto a hardwood dowel of the correct thickness - if you take off the excess at a slow rate and on a fine wheel you would not have to do much thread cleaning.

Hi guys

So i dont want to spend much more money atm. Any tips for using your old double chainring bolts for a ss chainring ? Instead of buying ss spefic chainring bolts. I have tried using washers but the washers interfere with the chain on the teeth of the chainring. Any other methods ?

Thanks for the help

Buying five short chain ring bolts are very inexpensive, 10 bucks each. Far less hassles.

Use a grinder..... on the nuts.... and safety goggles, and FFS don't hold the nut in your hand.... or with a set of pliers...

Did the latter once, with horrid results.

Another option is to clamp the bolt between two pieces os soft wood - eg balsa - with the amount you need to take off sticking out. Place in a vice and saw it down.

honestly I would just get other bolts... that way you have bolts if this does not work out...

otherwise use washers and if they interfere trim them and not the bolts.

I have built/converted about 5 singlespeeds. On the first 3 I just cut an old chainring to use as spacers. The 4th I used washers, this is a bit of a mission to tighten the bolts if you do not have the correct tool to hold the back with due to the fact that the washers turn easily. The final one (my baby) I just bought the shorter bolts, cost me about R120 for 5 anodized black.
