Cylelab Hogging The Cradle

SG1

My wife rides almost every weekend with the cyclab groups and lately she has told me howw busy and dangerous the cradle has been couse there have been so many slow riders getting in there way! I assume they are the same people who are complaining about cycelab overtaking them and using up the lanes!

Is there any other option for them???

How about get your slow ass out the way!

Tell her not to stress, just wait until the weekend after the 94.7 and the Cradle will be nice and quiet again.

It happens every year from mid September to mid November. In fact, the very same Lab group that she is riding in has probably doubled in size in the last 4 weeks.

Also, we should all remember that we were also "slow" riders once. So long as people have their arses in the saddle, fast or slow, it's all good imo. Everyone has to start somewhere, give them a break and show some tolerance.

A lot of people calling the piece of tar left of the yellow line a "cycle lane." Bzzz wrong. It's an emergency lane. And there are no laws to say that cyclists have to ride in the emergency lane.

Bzzz not wrong - that piece of tar left of the yellow line in the cradle is a dedicated cycle lane - ride the cradle and you will see what we are talking about.

He was referring to the 5k section towards Heia safari that someone referenced (which isn't part of the Lab route btw).  that is NOT a cycle lane, is an emergency lane.

The cradle is congested right now.  I ride with the Lab quite often and its a fact that the groups are 2 abreast (or single file where the road narrows) 99% of the time.  As in life, some lab members are idots (or just new to cyling and need to learn) and generally they are called to order by fellow riders or marshalls.  Otherwise as others have pointed out, the group will at times move into the road to avoid sand / glass / other hazards in the cycle lane, and like any other road user, the group will need to move into the road to pass slower cyclists.

If there is so much glass and 'debris' in the cycle lane, have none of the clubs thought about spending some money and maintaining the lane instead of complaining about it? I don't know but you could call them the Cradle Fairies or something like that!!!

Speaking of fairies, I see someone swept the road yesterday as you approach Steyn city up th ehill from Chartwell side to remove all the sand in the road from the dirt road that comes out there.

Well done to that dude. Always a hassle to make sure you don't fall over in the sand or get rear ended by a car as you keep on the tar.

Good job

Your wife "the pro" should actually get out the way of the slower cyclist as she should be supporting the growth of the cycling community. Everybody has to start somewhere so having the mind set of "get your slow ass out the way" is childish and pathetic if you ask me!

agree with this sentiment.  I applaud loudest for the folks who look over weight/over age/under dressed....who are riding a cheap "Makro bought" bikes and are on the back stretch of the loop all by themselves.  They are miles from any point of start or finish and yet they are still hamster wheeling away in the lowest possible gear.  Good for you.

They have real guts and glory and I don't think I'd have the stones to do what they are doing.  Keep at it guys.
