I did it 2 years ago on my MTB. Put slicks on and had a blast. Wasn't really in the mood to turn my knobblies into slicks, so bought a cheap set - you can pick them up for next to nothing. I dont see the point of expensive slicks..

PLUS - you get to fiddle before and after with your wheels, checking that the sealant is all topped up etc.

 

Then the progression happened..

Year 1 - MTB with slicks

Year 2 - Borrowed a mates road bike

Year 3 - Bought a road bike

I guess it depends

If you don't have tubeless then slicks are easy to change it

 

If you do have a tubeless conversion I wouldnt bother to change.

 

On my first 94.7 I did it on a Fuji 29er Mtb with slicks and managed a 3:36 so a good time is possible
