Converting a 9 speed to a 10 speed

Hi All,

 

I am currently getting the components to upgrade my 9 speed (2010 Mongoose Otero Super) to a 10 speed. I have sourced (planning to buy still) most of the components needed (shifters, derailleurs, cassette. etc) but I am worried as to how to go about with my chain rings on my crank.

 

I currently have a FSA Alpha Drive Forged Alloy (22/32/42T) crank set. My problem is that I have an ISIS drive bb and I can't  fit a new crank set.

 

Will the spacing between the crank set gears be an issue? And I suspect I must replace the three chain rings if I go 10 speed?

 

Should I stick to 9 speed or is it worth my while to upgrade?

Your crank (and chainrings) will be fine, Cassette, chain and shifters are the main components.

It may be a stupid question, but why do you consider 9 to 10 speed an "upgrade"? I have a 9 speed bike and am interested in your motivation.

 

You are currently, running a triple crank so you should have all the gearing range you need. Adding 1 cog in the rear will neither expand that range nor will it give you a new ratio.

 

How much will it cost and what benefit do you see?

 

Why this rather than a better set of wheels or fork?

I agree with Eddy. I'm running 1x10 on my one bike and planning on converting my 3x9 to 1x9 on the other. 9 speed components are half the price of 10 speed so why not stick with 9?

I actually want to upgrade my old, worn 8 speed groupset on my hard tail mtb, so decided to put my 9 speed  groupset onto the hard tail and go 10 speed on my full suspension. plan is to go single chainring in front then with a chainguide, seeing that I have constant issues with my chain comming off on the downhill sections.

Got a Shimano Deore XT 10 speed groupset from a fellow hubber for 1.5K which is not to bad in my book

You get better range with a 3x9 and prices are low, specially in used parts because of riders like you upgrading to 10 speeds.

I am happy with my 9 speeds set up and I keep buying 9 speeds XTR sets at great prices.

No need for a guide just get a narrowwide ring (from kitted.co.za) and a clutch derailleur (not compulsory) and off you go.

Thanx Orbit, I will take a look at that. trying to save weight on my heavy beast, so If I dont need a chainguide it will be beter

Only reason that promted the upgrade was my 2 x 8 setup on my hardtail that is kaput. And there is more 10 speed components available than 9 speed in the classifieds. So I decided to go 1x 10 on my full suspension and 3 x 9 on my hard tail. 

 

So basically I'm transplanting my 9 speed setup to my hardtail.Am more than happy with my 3 x 9 setup.

I sat with the same issue to convert 9 to 10 speed on my 29'er... With all the components to upgrade, gets pricey! (unless you upgrade everything on budget quality)

Went to LBS and had them order a Shimano 12-36T 9-Speed cassette, arrived yesterday and has made the world of difference. Granny gear pedals as easy as my 3x10 26" and I'm running an SLX 38/26 crank on the 29'er. Cost was only a R370 upgrade (and the price of a new chain if needed). Don't have the need to change to 10 speed now.

You can also get a narrow wide chainring from Rapide (Kiwi on here) for up front, I'm running one on my bike and have yet to drop a chain (touch wood) :)

I can get a Shimano Deore (HG62) 11-36 speed cassette as well as a Deore HG 54 chain  (both 10 speed), and plan to buy Shimano Deore XT shifter and derailleurs from a fellow hubber. Not sure if this is budget quality?

 

Havent forked out the cash yet. trying to find out what is best route going forward. I am happy with my 3 x 9 setup on my FS, but need a new setup on my HT. Current setup on my HT is a 8 speed Shimano Deore XT rear, with Alivio rapid shift triggers and alivio front deraileur...all cooked from wear and tear. My HT is a 2006 model and I am still running the same derailieurs, cant shift  up and down properly anymore

If you are going single on the front, then it makes sense to go 10 speed giving you more ratios...

Well, did my 1 x 10 conversion this weekend and took my bike out to Jonkershoek Sunday morning for a test run. Definitely a huge upgrade! Better gear ratios for climbing, 44/32/11 x 11-34 (old) vs 32 x 11 - 36 (new). Much lighter setup, and way more effective climbing. Thanx Roshambo for the components, My setup is sweet!
