Hi Mense

So I've been diagnosed gastroenteritis and this is day 2. Yesterday I had a fever of just below 40 as well which kept me from EVERYTHING!

The Dr put me on a 5 day anti-biotic, the other meds finish on Friday morning. Can I get back on the bike on Saturday? If not, how soon though?

I already feel much much better, just have LOADS of winds, demmit!!!

Have a lekker evening!

Hi Mopkop

Being on antibiotics in itself should not be a problem, the question is whether the gastro has resolved. Although frequently a mild annoyance, gastro can be a life-threatening dehydrator if not managed properly.

My advice would be to have at least 24 of no symptoms and normal bowel function before you go for a ride, and even if you do, take it easy by starting at half pace/effort/duration of what you normally would do.

Prehydrate and also keep your hydration up diligently whilst you ride. You may also need some additional electrolytes (in capsule or drink format) as you also loose plenty witht the runs.

Another bit of advice is to get yourself some pro-biotics which would help settle the gastro and restore normal flora (good bacteria) in your gut.

By the way, which antibiotic were you prescribed?

As far as I know the reason why you are not supposed to exercise while on antibiotics has nothing to do with the antibiotics itself. It is actually because of the infection you are treating with the antibiotics. When you exercise you put your heart under strain which makes it more susceptible to infection. If the infection you where treating has not cleared up completely there is a chance that it might spread to your heart.

Now if you have a bad infection the antibiotics might not clear it up completely, in stead it will reduce it to a point where your own immune system can tackle the remaining infection.

I have a lot of sinus problems and tend to get sinusitis at least once a year, I usually play it safe, finish the antibiotics course and if I feel good enough by then I get back to exercising, but, I ease back in to full load over a week or so.

NOTE: I am no expert,I might be completely wrong, this is just how I understand it.

Thanks for the replies

@SuperDS, His put me on Ciprofloxacin 250mg. Like I said, today I felt normal again. I didn't eat like I normally do as he said no animal products for 2 days. Bowl movements was definitely not regular, I struggled in comparison to yesterdays escapade!

Heart Rate yesterday while bed ridden was around 86-89bpm, today that was 61-66bpm.

Id like to go do about 100km LSD on Saturday, hence I'm asking.

Mopkop,

When your fuel tank (digestive tract) is compromised, endurance training is not the best idea. A better strategy might be a leg loosener.

I would suggest you forego a 100 km LSD spin and reset your target for maybe a very easy 90 mins (30 kms or so) on a flat course for Sat.

Rather avoid digging yourself into a deeper hole of recovery time.

I agree with 'Dale. 100km is definitely not the best idea after an infection like this.

Although exercise boosts your immune system, there is a time period (especially in endurance training) where your immune system is relatively more suppressed which leaves you open to much more nasty bugs,

Go for a lighter ride, and look forward to some heavier stuff next week, as opposed to being out of action for longer.

in terms of food intake fluids are most important. Generally proteins are more "difficult" to digest and absorb, hence the advice to avoid animal products for the time being. You could opt for essential amino acids just prior to and after your ride tomorrow to aid in muscle recovery (which your body uses in time of stress/infection).

And remember the electrolytes, even on a shorter leg loosener...

Strongs for the recovery! :D
