George Area MTB

Will be in George area for a week. Have ridden quite a few trails in the area.

I am interested in riding along the train track from the abandoned restaurant near the forest to the Herold town on the other side of the Montague pass.

Can someone tell me if this is safe? I have cycled along the track to the first tunnel but did not enter as I did not have any lights. Apparently the tracks are not used a lot and was thinking of making this one of my rides this holiday.

The trains don't run along the tracks any more, if that is what you are asking. But there have been a few muggings...

Rather ride to Knysna through the forest. It's a much nicer ride and you might see an elephant.

A "Powervan" uses the tracks from George. More details on Google...

Yes the last time we rode there it did look a bit dodgy with open/uncovered cables along the tracks. I am more worried about getting mugged than being chased by the Powervan (although I am supposed to be doing base training).

Thanks for the info. Will be doing the 7 passes road to Knysna for one. Maybe I will be able to take a ride at Harkerville as well.

Yup watch for the power van, had a near miss with it before, was also under the illusion that that line was in permanent disuse. Do not trifle with railway lines, I have had more than 1 near miss with trains and you look death straight in the eyes when you mistakenly put yourself in their pathway.

Ride over Montagu pass. Now that's a climb.

Also, there's Witfontein Forest with it's own XC and DH tracks.

Have done that plenty and looking forward to doing it a lot more in the next week!!!

Can't wait to get there!

Have seen some hiking paths along the mountain as well. Maybe I will swop my cycling shoes for trail running shoes one day and explore a bit.
