Front derailleur help

Hello everybody.

I'm in need of some advice with regards to a front derailleur for my Orbea frame. My knowledge where this is concerned is limited, so please bare with me. The Sram X7 and Sram Xgen derailleurs were removed, which I could never setup to work properly anyway. Currently on the bike I have a set of Shimano V Brake shifters, it has the brake, the up (thumb press) and down (pointing finger) shifters all incorporated into one unit. If that makes any sense at all. I have a 3 x 7 setup and my seat post tube has a 32mm outside diameter.

My question is this, what are my options where front derailleurs are concerned and ho do I know what will work there?

Not looking for anything expensive, just something descent that would work for now. It uses the clamp setup and no option for direct mounting.

I was offered a Shimano XO but unsure if this would work.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Search the Orbea site to see if it's a high or low clamp derailleur.

On a 3 x 7 setup I won't spend too much on a front derailleur.

Shimano offers some goog derailleurs at good prices.

Deore will be more than enough.

Hope that helps

Shimano does not make an XO so that wont work ;)

XT probably.

Sounds like an old bike, if I had to guess, I would say ge a top clamp 3x front derailleur. Deore, Alivio or Acera would do.

Deraileurs come in many variations.

Where does it clamp on the frame, top or bottom clamp.

You already mentioned that it is not a direct mount but if it is an old bike, chances are pretty good it is a top clamp.

The way the cable is routed and connects to the derailleur also makes a difference. Some deraileurs are top or bottom pull, others are dual.

Many Shimano derailleur clamps come with removeable inserts that can be removed/inserted to adjust the clamp diameter. Make sure you get these inserts, 32mm (31.8mm to be precise) is a pretty common size, where the newer bikes (carbon frames) mostly use 34.9mm. 28.6mm is more common on steel frames or old road bikes.

Something like this, Shimano Deore, Dual pull, Top Clamp and has the inserts for multi diameters:

Hope that helps!

Just like Tankman says. I dont think XT comes in a 7 speed variation so it might not work for you but check it out.
