Oak Valley or Jonkershoek for a good XC experience

Hi,

I'm currently visiting Cape Town and have really enjoyed the Tokai rides. I have one day top do something a bit further afield and am tossing up between the 32km circuit at Oak Valley or venturing to Jonkershoek.

I love beautiful scenery, some challenging ups, exhilarating downs, but nothing extremely technical; if I wanted to walk I'd be hiking!

I like the idea of going on a "known" route, because with only a day we won't have time to do much exploring and would rather just ride something known :-) I'd like a distance of 30-50km.

Would love to hear what the experts have to say about my potential choices!

Jane, I am no expert.

having ridden both, I am bias to Jonkies.  You will climb quite a bit though, but you will have loads of options.  You can literally spend the hole day there.

The cattle at Oak Valley could be intimidating.

Both have got great restaurants.

Oak Valley has the Pool Room.  Their food is very good, but so is the food at the Ride In at Jonkies.

At the Ride In, you might run in to some of the famous cyclists.

Eric Kleinhans and Cristoph Sauser were there today.

Oak Valley has a well marked route which is lots of fun.

Jonkers there is loads of awesome singletrack, but you would need someone to show you where it is as there is no set route.

My advice would be to go to Welvanpas in Wellington.  Its got a really nice 29km white route and also options of doing the black / yellow route if you want more.

Think there is a thread somewhere on the hub about Welvanpas.

I love both, but I'd say Oak Vally. Was riding Paul Cluver this weekend and again realized there's just something different about riding out there. Even after all this time it still feels more like exploring than pure riding trails.

Oak Valley has a LOT of single track, beautiful scenery and is a great day out. Their routes are also "routes". Jonkers is great, but it's not a...hmmm...trails are all linked and you have to pop out from one to the other or ride one then make your way back up to another one. Oak Valley is one long route. You can still mix and match, but you'll still go in one direction and regadrless of the section you ride it will be fun, beautiful and singular trackly.
