Mountain bike decisions

Hi, i am looking at purchasing a mountain bike for some socializing.

I have friends that do 12,15 - maybe a 20km jeep track trail every weekend or so and i wish to join them. I am more of a roadie and know nothing about mountain bikes. I have a budget of R 7000- R 8000 to play with. Budget cannot be increased as wife is already upset and i just bought a Carbon road bike last month...

I went to my bike shop and this is what they suggested to me for my budget. All are 29ers.

Silverback Spectra Comp

Merida Big 9 20-D

Titan Trail 29er

At the moment i am leaning towards the Titan. Its the more expensive one of the lot and better looking bike and apparently a better shock but seeing as i dont know anything about mountain biking and the components that goes with it i need some guidance.

Thanks

Hi Wayne,

You can give us a call or drop us an email on sales at cyclefactory.co.za. We stock and sell all 3 of those and will be able to assist with some advise and a good deal.

Pothole, for the riding you're intending on doing, even an old "poskantoorfiets" will suffice - you really can't go wrong with any of those bikes.

If it we're my money, I'd go with either the Silverback or the Titan.

Any of those options are fine for weekend jeeptracking.

But may I suggest this:

Slightly better specced for price:

And a brand far more coveted than any you suggested

Bike is better specced for price because the frame is a piece of crap.

Thanks for the comments so far guys. Can you maybe give me some opinions and suggestions between the 3 that i have listed.

Looking at the Merida, it seems to have a very cramped toptube.

Get the Titan - decent componentry and looks pretty flash.

I was hoping for more intelligent comparison of the specs between the bikes. Buying pretty bikes might be a trap.

A little snotty, wouldn't you say?

Think you are reading emotion in my text thats not there. I do not know mtn bike shimano at all thats why i am posting in the buyers guide section. So i would really have liked to hear something like bike 1 has better components than Bike 2 but bike 1 is lighter...thats what i mean with more intelligent comparison. Or something like that.

I am currently making a decision based on looks and i know its wrong. For all i know my bike shop is trying to sell me something at a reduced price cause it is bad specd and they are just trying to get it off the floor.

Thanks for the repleys so far.
