Hi guys,

Im new to the forum, meaning im new to mtb so i have a few questions.

1.Bike is a Mongoose Amasa Competition, anyone know anything of the bike??

2. How do i know if my wheels have sludge in or if its tubeless without removing everything. - Bought the bike from Cash Crusaders.

3. The rims of the bike is not any kind of metal ex aluminium, seems to be plastic or some other sort of composite. Are these any good??

Thanks in advance

i'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you are not trolling...

1)  Why did you buy the bike if you don't know if it is any good..

2)  Why do you buy a bike from cash crusaders?  Anyway, spin the wheel a few times and get the valve at the bottom.  Press it in to deflate, if white stuff comes out, it is tubeless and probably enough stans in it.  If not, it is not tubeless.

3)  Doubt that a cash crusaders bike will have carbon wheels, so it is aluminium.  scratch it with a piece of metal and see what colour comes out underneath the paint.

Relevant info:

1)  We need pictures

2)  Price paid for the bike

3)  Brand of wheels

4)  Component specification

If you supply the above you have a remote chance of getting some form of valuable info from the hub.

Pictures as requested.

I started the sport but did not want to buy a brand new bike as yet.

Saw this bike at Cash Crusaders for R5000 but got it for R3500.

It did not have a scratch on it so guessed the guy did not trek the bike dear his gat.

So would you say its a good bike to start with or did I waste my money???

Not a bad bike for the price.

It looks like the valves are Schraders. As most tubeless valves are Presta, I think it's safe to assume it's not tubeless.

Um I'll be honest here. I sold my last bike to cash converters after I'd ridden it into the ground. I even refused to give it to my sisters gardener since I knew it would cost more to repair than for him to buy a less worn out bike. Cash converter bikes tend to be donkeys or completely worn out. Either way its trouble. If buying second hand bike shops are safer since they'll give you an honest appraisal of the bikes current state of repair. You can be pretty sure those wheels aren't carbon since a set of carbon wheels will set you back around R10k minimum. As a beginner its actually usually safer to buy new since you can be taken for a ride in the second hand market. Knowing how to judge the amount of maintenance and repairs needed on a second hand bike is a subtle art. And if you have to replace parts immediately then you haven't really saved any money have you.

Looking at the pics now it looks reasonable. Perhaps I was quick to judge based on my experience. It looks like it hasn't been ridden much. Others can tell you more I'm sure.

Ben, I get what you're saying, but have a look at the pics. The bike looks neat! A hell of a lot better bike than what I started off on.

Mike, that's a lekker bike - ride it till it falls apart or until you have the cash and desire to upgrade.

HAHA! Those rims bring back memories. Did some dodgy drops on those rims and they held together. Decent bike for the price, would hate to know what the previous owner let it go for!

I agree with The_odinson.......decent piece of starter kit, way better than what I rode for a long time.

Maybe go the bmx tube and contact for the tubeless conversion. Good info above, those rims take a heap of rim tape.

Give it horns Mike, happy trails!

Thanks for being honest.

When I bought the bike I told the guys at Cash Crusaders I'm taking it to a local bike shop for inspection. If its not mechanically sound and parts needs to be replaced, I will be returning the bike. Took it to the shop, explained to them where I bought it and that they should check it. Next day and R275 later for minor service, the manager went with me through the bike and told me all is sound, all they corrected is setting the gears as it jumped around. Took the bike for a spin and it was sound.
