I have contemplated stripping my 2012 Silverback Mercury dual - she has so many chips and chaves anyway. Is it possible to strip her down to raw alu? What are the issues in doing so? Costs? Where to have it done if not possible to do myself?

I would imagine with a dualie you'd need to remove all the pivot goodies etc. Cost wise it's a cheapish project. Your bike is out of warranty so I don't think there's any implications.

What is the actual process of doing so? Paint stripping? Sanding - uneven finish? Anodizing? Do you need to rethread pivot points if acid dipped?

Buy one of these drill polish kits from a hardware shop.A few minutes and aluminium looks like a mirror.

I have recently started a "raw" project...How do I keep my frame "shiny"? without spending hours of polishing it every now and again?

Any way of sealing the aluminum? will clear coat do?

Raw clean alu reacts with oxygen in the air within seconds to form a thin aluminium oxide layer. This is the grey stuff you get on your hands when handling it and this raw finish degrades very quickly, more so in a wet / coastal climate.

Anodising also produces alu oxide but in a more structured (crystallised) way that is much thicker, abrasion resistant, stable (unreactive) and well bonded to the raw metal surface.

Each time you rub it down with steel wool or other abrasive, you remove a layer of alu oxide and a fresh layer of oxide soon forms on the exposed raw metal. Best way to preserve the raw alu finish is to clearcoat it IMO.

Strip. Apply Remove all. Paint gone. Clean. Rebuild. If the frame has brutal scratches I'm not sure. I've only rawed my steel roadie before. So Oom googs is n' tjom.

Ok. Can't be that difficult. Where can one source a silverback sticker kit?
