Bicyclegear Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Last week I spent a lot of time trying to get information about riding on the Zachariashoek Trails near Franschhoek. I found very little. Over the weekend I ventured out that way and decided not to hit the Matoppie Trail, but rather venture into this lost corner... ...and lost it is, but in a good way. The riding was tough. Tracks are rutted and you can't do the loop anymore because of a major wash away after the fires and the resulting erosion. But, I spotted baboon and Klipsringer up on the top of the plateau. The track I was on disappeared further up the mountain. The views are amazing and with "no service" you feel truly out there... Checkout all the photos here...

You're supposed to get permission/permits from the Capenature office in paarl. Well that was the status quo when i used it for an adventure race in early 2013. then the fire came and that was that. I wasn't sure what the status was, but please let me see the fotees! edit:ok found them in one of the galleries...yoh looks the same as it used to actually!

It was not possible and you have to indeed get a permit from Paarl, which I am told is not difficult. I actually entered the Zachariashoek Trails from the oppostie side of the river. The routes have become very rutted, hard packed and quiet rocky (I got a snake bite on my tyre right at the end of my ride). You can't do a loop at the bottom anymore due to a huge wash away. After the big fires, I think there has been major erosion. Still worth it though. On the climb I had to turn back, but it goes further up the mountain. From what I have seen on Googlemaps, it ends up overlooking Paarl. When you going?
