Doping culture in cycling 'still exists' according to Circ report

I'll try and remember to get out that Christophe Bassons book this evening so that I can type out the section on the new (currently undetectable) drugs in the peloton.

On the flip side, I also read David Walsh's book "Inside Team Sky" and coming from a man who is a total anti-doping crusader, it was very revealing how he's 100% convinced that Sky is above board.

Yes, there are bad apples (we currently don't know how many). But it certainly doesn't mean the whole barrel is bad. And I'm still convinced that many of the great battles we've witnessed recently have been done clean.

I know no one cares about ye olde 'persona non grata' but I am just 'putting it out there' for my friend Scotty

Yes, GoLance, go far away.

The report quoted is the Cycling Independent Reform Commission report after their investigation into cycling governance during the 1990's and 2000's under the stewartship of the great paragons of virtue, Hein Verbruggen and his accolyte and hand-picked successor, Pat McQuaid.

It clearly shows the preferential treatment LA got from the Cycling Authorities and how they protected and supported him in his malevolent ways.

They clearly did not want him caught and when he was bust in 1999, they allowed him to backdate his TUE. When they were subsequently pressured in 2006 into investigating the claims that he had tested positive, they allowed his lawyers to draft significant parts of the "Independant" Commission they convened to ensure blame was shifted from him (and by implication, them) and onto the hapless laboratory that was vilified.

They were so conflicted, they even supported and testified (ie lied) on his behalf in at least two legal cases he brought. I hope the parties who were prejudiced sue the $h1t out of them and that they are charged with perjury.

I have just scanned the report, but as with the Oct 2012 USADA report (which they also tried to protect LA from), I will go to the trouble of reading it in it's entirety. Bring on the fanboys.

Just don't say anything about Walsh being ra-ra-Sky. You'll get blocked on Twitter.

OK, here's that excerpt I promised from Christopher Bassons book ("A Clean Break") regarding the new designer drugs appearing in endurance sports.

Currently questions are being asked about the extent to which products such as AICAR, GW50516, TP500 and GAS6 are being used. Some of them have already been found during searches of vehicles and have been used by some athletes, doctors and soigneurs. These substances provide an equivalent effect to EPO, because they improve the performance of the athlete by boosting the transport and utilisation of oxygen by the body.

Their effect is very well known. The combination of AICAR and TP500, for example, increases the number of mitochondria in the muscles. These cells are in a way little energy plants, which transform substrates (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins) into energy through the use of oxygen. These two products also bring about an increase in lipolysis (the breakdown of fat to provide energy). They maintain lipolysis during intense efforts.

To be more specific, when an athlete is riding at 80% of his maximum, in principle he stops burning fat and only burns carbohydrate. By using these products, he can continue to burn fat as well as carbohydrate, even at 95% of his maximum. This additional power, which stems from the use of fat reserves, offers a huge advantage. It is absolutely impossible to achieve this naturally. Meanwhile the public can see another effect of the products in the physical transformation competitors into athletes who don’t seem very muscular and are very lean. They have a very low fat percentage because they are able to burn all their fats, including those in muscle fibres, and benefit from an increase in energy.

With regard to growth factor GAS6, this allows the secretion of endogenous EPO. It is completely undetectable.
