Considering a homemade build

Seems like you've done your homework ;) I'm sure the mildsteel will hold up nicely and the pinch bolts are a good idea.

I've been reading up on the adjustable chainstay length. It looks like you going to be using that system, NS Soda also has that. To be honest I only read about it this week and I love the idea! I'm going to see if it can be incorporated it into my frame design. It makes sense to have an adjustable frame that can work as a trail-enduro-AM bike.... will save me from buying different bikes then customize each.... and the wife can get that new bag she wanted lol....a win-win situation

That adjustable dropout from Nova was a real win. I have it set up so I can reduce the chainstay down to 420mm if I am running a smaller tyre, and maybe even stretch it out to 435mm and just squeeze in a 29er wheel. i am running a pretty low BB height (317mm, so it might just be an option to play with. This really could be the one bike frame that does everything.

Nice man! That really sounds good, I like that excitement coming through as you're explaining. I read earlier on PinkBike (link added) about the adjustability of the Mondraker Dune. It looks like a new trend to make one bike very adjustable, it makes sense to spend on exceptional components for one bike coz it gets too much if you own two, three or four bikes.....it's probably going to break up marriages soon

There must be a limit to the adjustability if you thinking of selling frames, consumers might get confused or ride the frame with incompatible settings. If it's for yourself then you can go crazy.

Good Luck with the build and Design.... I am eagerly awaiting the finished project. I always wanted to design my own bike, i just lack the skills.

Thanks buddy...I'm just as excited to get it done, but I want to get it right. So patience and being open to opinions is the order of the day with these types of projects. If you want to build a bike then just go ahead, the key is to plan ahead all/most aspects....and DON'T GIVE UP!

I've been testing my drift trike for a while now, given it to a few hard riders and she's still going strong!  Here's a few screen shots of a vid my buddy took while I was driving

As if I did not have to absorb so many technicalities, technology, design details etc etc etc.....I stumbled across KNOLLY....AAAhhhhh!

Just when you thought you had a winning formula then an approach like theirs just throws the baby out with the bathwater. I never took much note of their bikes coz they're kinda fugly....but... According to every article I ready says it works, the suspension, balance, and everything else works so well together. So I'm going to research this a bit more before I carry on.

I dont like the 2006/7/8 styled seat tube and headtube parrallel look....or the weird top and downtube curves...my personal opinion is that its engineered and not designed.

But, I'll be honest and say that I like that their approach is unique, exactly what you get when you don't come from that industry...you get something you can't explain but it works real well.

Anyone interested in real mtb dual suspension info must read this: http://members.home.nl/vd.kraats/ligfiets/pa/index.htm

especially the main conclusions section. It reveals all the marketing mambo jambo and gives clear mathematical explanations. I got it off the Linkage x3 site

The statement that really stuck in my mind throughout the read says:

No geometry is right for everyone and no frame can achieve for any one person every goal generally desired in dual suspension performance.

...priceless

Antonio Osuna's blog http://linkagedesign.blogspot.com/ hasa range of graphs that I used to compare with bikes I've ridden. It's interesting when you start seeing how bikes you liked riding had similar graphs and....to me... gave some clarity on the type of suspension that I feel comfortable on.

Here is the link to the freeware Linkage x2  http://members.home.nl/vd.kraats/ligfiets/pa/downloads/linkage2.exe

its a great piece of software that even has simulation!!!!! I'm really impressed

Did my frame and the results looked okay-ish. After I shifted some pivots, all results looked much better.

I love the fact that you can do live tweaking and simulation, features you normally have to pay tens of thousands for.

I did a sample of my Spez enduro SL too

Looking Good, Burner!

edit: When I started playing with Linkage I got stuck on it for weeks until I was happy with the results. It did speed things up dramatically and let me play with some very unconventional ideas before going back to tried and tested ones.

Such slow progress, but I am nearly ready for welding...just waiting for a couple of gussets from laser cutting.

Damn thats looking good noli! What bearings are you using at the pivots?

Thanks!

I am using a pair of 6200-2RSH bearings. 30mm OD, 10mm ID and 9mm width. Its bigger than any of the bearings on my Giant Reign, but to be honest, I just went with them because they "felt" right.

Nice, I just love Rhino and it's versatility.

Where did you manage to get chromoly? I struggled to find a supplier and went with stainless Steel on another project. Try stainless on some sections, except where you are going to add threads because it tends to bind

I was looking for a chromoly some time ago for a fork I built, got some from Placo. They do aircraft components, and import tubing for airframes, speak to Eric, (011) 8279301, if he doesn't have the size you want, he can add it to his next order.

Edit: they are at Rand Airport, Germiston

Those are  a good choice, nice and big! I can't wait to see this all come together! Do you have any Linkage test results? Chain growth, travel ramp etc

Thanks a bunch Stretched@Birth. I really thought we ran out of suppliers here in SA. I must've called about 10 steel importers with no luck
