Di2 with Disc Brakes

Any thoughts on whether it is worth going to Di2 Ultegra and Disc brakes?

Will a newer version of Di2 be out soon?  How often do Shimano come out with new versions of groupsets?

If one has a normal Ultegra 6800 groupset would I need to change everything to go to Di2 or would some components be compatible with a Di2 setup?

You'll only need to change the shifters and derailleurs to go to Di2, but you'll need the hydraulic STi's for the disc brakes, unless you go for cable disc brakes.

P.S. - I don't know whether Shimano have a Di2 hydraulic STi

IMO

"Any thoughts on whether it is worth going to Di2 Ultegra" YES "and Disc brakes" NO

Di2 is a pleasure to ride with, while I don't like the idea of being dependent on batteries and electronic stuff ...that's the way of the future. The pleasure of using Di2 imo outweighs the extra weight of the battery and having to charge it (btw battery life is very good).

Disk brakes on a road bike.... ok if you spend a lot of time riding down very long descents that require a lot of braking and a lot wet muddy conditions, otherwise its just to much extra PT (go check all the threads about disc brake problems, bleeding, squeaking, pads touching disc, etc....)

I'm not sure if their is much normal Ultegra stuff that is compatible with Di2 stuff, doubt it.

Read the reviews about the Shimano road disc setup but here is what i found out:

1.) Its hellishly expensive to go hydraulic discs with DI2.

2.) If you use Shimano you need to go 11 speed (Cranks, hubs, wheels etc.) Shimano lightweight discs are also only centre lock etc. Looking at a lot of money to do it. BTW - i saw the new Specialized Roubaix in DI2 hydraulic road - at R 135k. So it gives you an idea.

Discs are great - i have them on my CX bike. I wanted to build it as an Ultegra DI 2 version. However the costs and amount of changes they required were enormous. Just crazy.

Rather get something like the cable actuated TRP HYRD brakes which i am using if you need discs. I have them on my tandem and CX bike and they work great and are a lot cheaper.

So rather than upgrading a whole group you can use your existing DI2 with cable actuated brakes and go disc.

That is assuming your frame is compatible.

And having ridden discs there is no doubt they are the future of every form of road cycling. It will take time and they will get lighter, but its really no longer a debate.
