South Africa’s premier mountain bike event, the ABSA Cape Epic, is cycling its way to CPUT. Riders will arrive at CPUT's Wellington Campus on Friday 20 March, which marks stage five of the race. On Saturday, 21 March, they will set out for a 71 km ride, which will also end at the Wellington Campus.

On Sunday 22 March riders will head out on the last leg of the race, a 87 km route that will take them to the finish line at the Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville.

This year CPUT is the proud co-sponsor of staff member Etienne Joubert and his race partner, Leanne Brown-Waterson, who are top mountain bike riders. The team is also being sponsored by Display Mania, a Montague Gardens based company.

Etienne Joubert is a staff member in the School of Sport, Events, Tourism and Hospitality and is based at the CPUT Wellington Campus.

For Joubert, who has held national colours in various sporting codes, mountain biking is second nature.

“What draws people to mountain biking is the outdoors. In road cycling you are in the urban areas, whereas with mountain biking you are in nature and exposed to all the elements,” he says.

Joubert is also no stranger to the ABSA Cape Epic, having competed in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2014.

Leanne Brown-Waterson is co-owner of Display Mania, a Montague Gardens based company that specializes in indoor and outdoor display systems.

Brown-Waterson is also a veteran ABSA Cape Epic competitor, having taken up the challenge in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

“I just really enjoy being on the bike and I also love the competitiveness of the sport,” she says.

Brown-Waterson says the ABSA Cape Epic is a must for any mountain bike racer who is up for a challenge.

From cowboys to punks, CPUT students thought of the box this year when designing their trolleys for the CPUT Epic Trolley Race. The race is an annual event and sees students street race fancy dressed up trolleys. With the Absa Cape Epic coming to CPUT on 20 March, students incorporated the race into their designs.

How exciting! I am a college professor here in the States, and I love events like this, when students get to show their spirit and creativity!  Thanks for posting these, and glad to know you all have a front row seat for the Cape Epic!  I hope you will post more photos when the stage comes to your campus on March 20th!
