Exchange Rate - Good time to buy now?

It would be interesting to know if this is the best time to buy cycling kit.  As we all may know the Rand has taken a pounding in the last few weeks against the Dollar, a good 10% drop in value. That is sure to filter through to pricing on all imported goods including cycling.  Thus does it make now the right time to stock up on all things cycling?

The Dollar has been the biggest winner and the Rand in particular has not devalued all that much to the Euro but compared to October last year there is a 5% difference.  The majority of cycling gear/equipment is coming from Europe so I am sure they are pricing in Euros but Trek, Bontrager and other American companies will no doubt be far more expensive soon.  It would be interesting to know if the Japense companies are selling in Dollars or Yen.

I wonder how much ordering has taken place already by local agents and if they have taken forward cover.  We could be in for a big shock at sticker price of things in 3 months time.

It actually seems to make more sense to buy locally now for the man in the street than overseas as the local pricing is based on the old exchange rate which is possibly up to a year old.

Any clothing will incur a 40% increase on the landed price due to import duties... then +Vat as well...

So be careful when buying clothing, be it cycling ot any other...

It depends what you buy and where.

I just returned from Europe via Dubai.

I bought Assos clothes in Zurich (debatable, one of the most expensive cities) for around 30% cheaper than I could get it here.  Then, I could still claim their VAT back.

Perfume for missus was R1650 in Dubai, R1350 at Edgars.

Watch for me, was R6900 in Stuttgart (after VAT was refunded), but the very same one R12800 in Dubai (suppose to be Duty Free).  That same watch is SA Duty Free is R9980.

In my experience, Dubai Duty Free is a rip-off.

I priced a couple of things, and I could get it cheaper in Europe and SA.  I also was not going to pay R70 for a Late there.

Dubai is a marketing marvel or farce depending on how you look at it.  Most things are more expensive there whether at their Duty Free or in their malls compared with SA and probably most of the developed world.  They have created this preception that they are cheap when in fact they are not.
