Hi, does anybody have a MTB route from Alberton/Rietvlei to Parys? Direction and GPS way points would be appreciated.

Thank you,

It is possible, but unfortuantely I cannot give a GPX file. I have ridden between Alberton and Vereeniging a few times, there a a few gravel sections along the R59 (up to the Circus in Daleside) and also along the railway tracks (through Meyerton). You will have mostly just to head south all the way

I would suggest that you keep to the eastern side of the R 59 all the way through Vereeniging, avoiding De Deur, Once in Vereeniging, follow this route.

I don't want to be a spoilsport , but Mario Milani drive , the start on the map up to Ascot on Vaal rd. is not safe . It is lined with old abandoned factories on the one side , and dense bush and the river on the other. Lots of people living in there. I work near the spot ,but don't ride there.

I don't know of any incidents, I just think it's dodgy.

Maybe some V town guys with advice or an opinion ?

I am originally from Vereeniging and agree that it looks dodgy. However, there is not enough cyclists in the area for criminals to target or set up a trap, and the opportunist troublemakers won't have time to act on a passing cyclist.

In general this trip should only be attempted by a group of guys, but will be very lekker as soon as you are out of town.

Cannot help with trails to ride out of Vereeniging / Vuil Vanderbijl, however this could be the final stretch into Parys (to the first stop in town)

Notes:

  • From the the R59 is joined at the air field, there is an option to cross the tar and ride a gravel section next to the R59 down to the river before town.
  • Biggest issue getting here will be crossing the Vaal and land access, so it will be (mostly) gravel roads
  • If you do not want to ride tar, the roads marked with red lines are out.
  • Since you're looking at MTB, the R59, which generally has wide yellow lanes is out.
