This will be my first KZN event, and I am going to try the DH on my trail bike :w00t:

I just have a question about full face helmets for the DH, do they need any certification, and are helmets that have a removable chin bar acceptable? I know you need a peak

Also are the helmet rules for this event any different compared to other DH events in the country or DH parks abroad?

Thanks in advance!

The question should rather be - would you want to do a DH race wearing an uncertified helmet with a removeable chin guard?

you referring to the Bell with removable chin or the Met ???

pretty sure the manufacturer will have some sort of spec that will either comply with regulation or not.

  • ASTM F1952 - Downhill mountain bike helmets
  • ASTM F2032 - BMX bike helmets

So it would comply?

sooooooooooooooooooooo.

back to the topic

the weekend at hand......

when you bump into Mr Floros busy taping off lines on the way up Cascades and he says to you....."go all the way up and ride "x..y... and z" , and tell me what you think"

then you have a good idea **** is going to be real......

i rode half of said run "x y and z" before pinch flatting....... (PINCH FLAT BECAUSE I LET SO MUCH AIR OUT IN THE HOPE OF EEKING EVEN A TINY BIT OF TRACTION IN THE WET FOREST ALL THE WAY ON TOP OF CASCADES....)

What i can tell you is....

-think steeeeeeeeep......off camber.....into dropoff.......into hairpin switchback....into drop off into switchback.......did i mention steeeeeeeeeeep..... all with zero traction....

-for those of us that squealed about pedalling at St Ives...... bring your biggest set of fresh panties....and some spare legs and possibly some Lance Juice.

-if it does rain (seems likely at this stage) bring a spare sense of humor and extra riding shorts ....chances are you will be doing most of the enduro on your behind sliding down a hill next to your very expensive #enduro rig.....

-i doubt that top forest section is going to dry.... even if it doesnt rain.... it is well moist and shaded..... and has about as much traction as a block of ice on an ice rink at the moment.

ps go watch some of the Rotorua ews for inspiration.... if conditions are on race day as they were last night then this will be pretty damn close their forest sections......

with PEDALLING lmfao

i personally cannot wait..... its going to be different to anything we have raced this year....

tonight we will be back to see what else the evil Mr Floros has in stall......

oh and on a side note..... try get their early friday.... i personally think you want to have at least one sighting run for this..... this isnt going to be a Giba type Enduro where you can pull in at full tilt and wing it.

but hey thats just my opinion.

You know this is the Giba thread and not the Cascades thread right...  :whistling:

So I did the DH on my enduro bike at St Ives and managed to get two clean runs which I was pretty chuffed with.

I was just wondering if the DH at Giba can also be done on any bike, having B lines for the bigger obstacles etc?

Absolutely. It is rocky and rough in spots but very definitely ride-able on a trail bike

FB - it is totally rideable on a trail bike ... you will need to get your head around the rocks at the top, but they are very manageable if you just think about them and ride within yourself.

there is one drop off that you can go around and then 2 tabletops.

the bottom has one steep bit, but its just a bank.

So perfectly rideable - the issue is people overthink the top rocks that all as they are 2m away from the startgate

As Nigel said, perfectly rideable on a trail bike. In my opinion is probably better suited to a 160mm bike than a downhill bike. It does have steep parts and it does have rocky parts but nothing big.

Hey RayJ

Giba is all pretty tightly packed into one valley of extreme goodness..... so even if it were to be in the furthest reaches of the valley it wouldnt be a mammoth ask to get to the top in a hurry.

Am no gravity defying mountain goat but i cannot see the climb to the top of any place in Giba taking more than 20 minutes.....
