Hay guys and girls, i am new to this forum and i think this will be the best place to ask for some advice from some of you guys that know all the in's and out's.

I come from a road bike background but have been out of the cycling world for quiet some time. Now i decided to get back on the bike but a MTB rather than a road bike (it just looks like more fun).

I did a few rides on the mtb like to Hell and Back, karoo to Coast, the oyster festaval ect and loved the feeling of being apart of nature.

Now the question, i want to get a bike for more or less R30K, i have been looking at the Classifieds but the things have changed so much since i use to ride as a roadi and i am totally clueless when it comes to Mtb's. How do i make a decision? Specialized, Scott, GT, pinarello momsen ect ect ect? then Group Set?

Are you guys willing to give me some advise as to where do i start? I would like a duel susspension cause i think it will be more comfortable for the tipe of riding i intend to do(FUN ride) but then some guys told me that ill lose alot of power on a soft tail(ill need all my available power).

Im not to worried about depreciation of value too much cause i dont think ill replace the bike every year i want to have a lekker bike that rides nice looks nice and get me to a could beer at the finish reasonably comfortably.

I work out of the country but when i get home i would like to go ride around the Cape town areas so the bike will also only be used one month for every two months or so.

Any advise as to what i should consider will be much appreciated.

Pretty much everyone is going to first ask you what type of riding you want do, i.e. trail vs xc, 29 vs 26 vs 27.5. Fun ride doesn't really tell us much, what's fun to you?

Then recommend the usual suspects in terms of value for money: Giant Trance/Anthem (typically SLX/XT groupsets). The AL versions can both be found new for around R25k. You can spend the remainder of your budget on cycling kit; get decent contact point stuff, i.e. shoes/shorts/bib. Alternatively, if you're feeling adventurous you can build something for around 30k. If you're a more average size: medium/large, there's lots of options in the classifieds.

There's tons of info on the various suspension systems around the net, and much discussion on loss of pedalling efficiency (pedal bob). Most of the new systems are pretty efficient by design with various techniques employed to improve this: full lockout, inertia valves, on the fly adjustment, etc..
