Guys, I am on my way to Italy tonight for business and I wanted to buy a new frame and groupset while I am there. What is the best way to do it, take an old bike with and leave it there, or just bring teh new one back in a bag and not declare it.

Has anyone done this before?

Hey daveS.

dont worry bout taking one over with you, just bring the new one back.

A. they wont notice you had one with you on the way out and,

B. its a recreational item (for personal use) and they will have a hard time trying to prove you bought it outside SA, so just dont declare it.

im here in eng at the moment and bought i new bike while i was here, when i return i dont intend to declare it.

so i wouldn't worry about it!

but have an awesome trip tho!Approve

Very, very clever, oh great ones!!

Announce your devious intentions to the world so now they will search everonye................Just declare it and there probably wont even be any fuss.......

Remember exccess bagage is the most expensive form of freight and 20kg is the max for checked baggage in cattle class.

Alternatively, get them to ship it to SA.

Dr Seuss.... SA's dumbest smuggler??

Well this kinda depends ont the airline that you are flying but you can check bike/ frame in as special luggage for a small haddling fee.  It normally round R500.

Then when it comes to VAT, when you buying your bike ask them to fill out a vat returns form, then when you leave Italy get it stamped at the airport. You then send that form back when you get home and few weeks later they send you a check in the post for the VAT you paid in the Italy look up on the web for complete instuction for italy.

Declair it here,  Incase something goes wrong,  you will have to pay Local Vat but there no duties on bikes.
