Edge 500 HRM not accurate

Hey peeps,

I recently picked up a Garmin Edge 500 for a really good price. It came with the cadence/speed sensor and HRM strap (original hard one).

Cadence/speed sensor is working 100%, but I can't get the HRM to reflect an accurate heart rate.

I used it for the first time this last weekend. Before I had even pulled out the drive on my bike, it was registering 135bpm!! My resting heart rate is 60.

When riding, I can be pumping away up a hill and it registered 150bpm. Should be way higher. Then later when idling down a hill it shows 180bpm. This thing is mad :)
When analysing my ride on Garmin Connect, I hit a max bpm of 248. lol. I am sure I would have noticed if I had exploded :)

I have made sure it is moist before putting it on. Tried it on my left side. Nada.

Any ideas guys? Or should I just get a new soft strap one (or what is better?)?

i seem to recall coming across a number of forum posts stating issues with the 'original' hard strap one. did you purchase it brand new?
if so have you tried licking the strap contact patches, the moisture help create a stronger more reliable connection

Not tried licking, but I have put saliva on my finger and rubbed it on. To be honest though, I am not 100% sure where the contact patches are so probably putting it in the wrong place.

Is it the ribbed section of the strap on each side?

I got the strap with the Edge 500 pre-owned. Original owner said he used it and it was 100% though, so I am probably just doing something wrong.

the edge 500 is a receiver of data....its the strap that is to blame.

Maybe just buy a new strap

Ye - I figured it was a strap issue. Would like to see if I can resolve it though. An HRM3 is around R1k in the shops on Edenvale side.

My bike is already starting to cost me a fair amount (started 1.5 month's back). Need to try put the spending brakes on :)

I don't even have to wet mine with water or spit, it works 100% without it.

Some guys say the Polar strap with the Garmin sensor works better.

I have the Premium strap.

What is the premium strap? Is it the HRM3? Whatever you have, I think I want that. I don't like to fiddle. Just want to hop on and ride.

i know the soft strap version of the HRM is much better.

maybe try replacing the battery first before considering buying a new one.

I replaced the batteries in both the cadence/speed sensor and the HRM the day I picked up the Edge 500.

Going to try give it a wash with soap and water and see if that helps.

Perhaps I must just bite the bullet and get a new one.

Also want to get a power meter though. Sigh... My wife is going to start hurting me just now.

Also wanted to suggest maybe to give it a good wash ...

There are 2 Garmin straps, an normal one and premium one, not sure what the internal differences are, but the premium one I think is softer and more comfortable.

Yup seems the HRM3 is the Premium one

Cool beans. Wash it is. Heading off at 14H00 tomorrow to potter around The Vale. Hopefully it will be working. Otherwise Sat I am off to find myself a premium strap (power meter will have to wait a little bit).

Agreed replace the battery. That normally fixes.

That said IMO the premium strap is so much more comfortable and well worth the dollars.

I took my Edge 500 in for repairs and ended up getting an upgrade to a brand new unit. My old unit had a problem with the barometric sensor and the Heart rate strap was perfect. You may have it for mahala. I work in Woodmead. You just need to collect

I had the same issue with the 500. If replacing the battery doesn't work. Try the following.

  • Wetting it does help
  • Make sure you don't have a metal zipper running over the unit on your chest, this seems to be what caused the issue with mine. Opening the zipper or lifting it off the monitor would sort the issue out immediately.
  • Try take a few layers off. In winter with a few layers on the unit wouldnt work as well.
  • Buy a 510... :)

You may be onto something. My cycling shirt is a zip up - full front. My wife purchased it for me and was R800. She is not going to be happy - lol.

And ye - I am on the hunt for a 510 (or 810). Taking forever to find one though.

I don't want to buy new. I have so many gadgets because I relieve people of theirs when they have had enough. Enables me to buy even more gadgets :)
