Hi all

Does anyone have any information on road routes in the Drakensberg region? Looking for safe routes anywhere up to 100km per route for a small solo trip in August. I don't have any specific locations in mind but looking for good climbs, scenic routes etc.

Can't seem to find much other than MTB info and I have never visited the area yet!

Thanks in advance

On the kzn side you will probably be limited to the main roads as almost all other roads are gravel unless you have a cyclocross bike. These roads are almost all single lane, have an official speed limit of 100kph and are heavily used taxi's, cars & trucks.

try calling Chris at All Out Adentures (Northern Berg) & Iain at Mt Splendour (Central Berg). They would be able to give you more local knowledge.

I certainly wouldn't want to ride my bike on any of these roads

I live very close to Nottingham Road and about 25 km off the Berg in KZN . There are a couple of beautiful roads to ride here . Loteni road out of Nottingham road about 70 km out and back with lots of climbing . Kamberg road can give you a ride of close on 200 km out and back in the direction of Giants Castle . Both of these roads are way quieter than most and offer spectacular scenery . It is possible to ride the interlinking roads depending on the day of the week and time , if you want to avoid a lot of traffic . PM me if you want more info

I did a ride from Drakensberg Gardens to Underberg and back and added a little extra to go to the Rhino Horn mountain/nature reserve which is on the other side of the resort.  This was around 85km.  Great riding on a quiet road with beautiful scenery and tough climbing. There are a few pot holes you need to be aware of but otherwise it is a top route.

These roads are not dirt. They are tar roads that I ride regularly . I actually live on the Kamberg road and if I go out in early in the morning I may only see 4 or 5 cars in a couple of hours. Lots of great mountain biking here too but these 2 roads I mentioned are tarred. A few potholes in certain sections but no big deal.

The Loteni rd is dirt once you are about 35 km up the road. Would be a cool ride on a cyclocross bike.

Now that you mention it it is quite a bit of tar with some nice hills from Nottingham road. We stay in a little cottage on the dirt part of that road by the waterfall quite often and the road offers some superb hill training in both directions!

From Nottingham the Kamberg road is tar all the way to Giants Castle so you can loop from Notties to Giants to Mooi River then back to Notties 13km along the R103...but this last bit not so nice. It has toll dodging trucks and is narrow.

The Loteni Road is tar about 25 to 30 km out of Notties till you hit the dirt.

The Fort Nottingham road is also tar for some distance out of Notties.
