In a couple years time this list may look a bit different. So glad to see that lady racers also got considered and included on the list. Willing to bet that two of Tracey Hannah, Rachel Atherton, Tahnee Seagrave, Manon Carpenter & Emmeline Ragot will have a place in an updated version. As would Jolanda Neff, Pauline Ferrand Prevot, Emily Batty & Jenny Risveds.

Among the gents I think Gwin, Bruni and Hill will also feature. Sauser should also be on this list as should Burry Stander. Kulhavy will get a look in at some point too. Men's XCO is a bit boring at the moment as there's no one who is really taking the fight to the big three (Schu, Abz & Jaro).

Anne-Caroline has to be no1.

Forget World Cup wins, anyone else on the list got 13 rainbow jerseys to their name?

Without taking away from her achievements but how strong was her competition? Sometimes wins are more telling if they are gained against opponents of similar ability. However 13 rainbow jerseys says she would've been a pretty darn serious contender if she was racing in this era.

She had tough competition no doubt about it but she was an absolute dominant force. The likes of Missy Giove, Leigh Donovan etc were all very strong riders.

You need to look at her form on the bike to know that she would be extremely competitive against today's riders.

Didn't she once almost win a senior title while still a junior, but was denied the title because of a UCI rule?

are we talking about ann caro? ja she races all season as an elite then went to race world's, entered seniors and I think even qualified as a senior but then the forced her to race juniors in the final, she crossed the finish line with her middle finger in the air. and won the race and think fastest overall lady on the day

Thanks Max! Not that clued up on mountain bike racing history which is why I asked. Will check on YouTube and Wikipedia to learn more.

Sheesh boet you're better off asking me about recent history but I think Rock has answered that.

Although I would hazard a guess it was the same rule the UCI used to keep Jolanda Neff from racing elite's at last year's World Champs even though she'd been kicking everyone's behind all season in elite's to win the overall!

That's the incident I remember reading about. Shot for adding the detail!
