Section 5.03 BIKE SPECIFICATIONS

(a) All bicycles and bicycle equipment must conform to the specifications set forth in this

Section. Any athlete (other than an athletes competing in the HC Division or the PC Open

Division) using a nonconforming bicycle or otherwise violating this Section will be

disqualified:

(i) Length cannot exceed two meters, and width cannot exceed 75 centimeters;

(ii) The distance from the ground to the center of the chain wheel axle must

measure at least 24 centimeters;

(iii) A vertical line touching the front most point of the saddle may be no more than

5 centimeters in front of and no more than 15 centimeters behind a vertical

line passing through the center of the chain wheel axle. The cyclist must not

have the capability of adjusting the saddle beyond these limits during the Race;

(iv) The "front‐to‐center" distance, which is defined as the distance between a

vertical line passing through the center of the chain wheel axle and a vertical

line passing through the center of the front axle, must measure not less than

54 centimeters, except where the distance between the center of the chain

wheel axle and the top of the saddle is less than 71 centimeters (in this case the

front‐to‐center distance cannot be less than 50 centimeters). The "front‐tocenter"

distance must not measure more than the 65 centimeters, or seven

eighths of the distance between the center of the chain wheel axle and the top

of the saddle, whichever is greater. Applicability of the two foregoing

exceptions is determined by measuring from a point on top of the saddle which

is 14 centimeters behind the front most point of the saddle.

(b) Fairings are prohibited. Any device added or blended into the structure that may decrease,

or that has the effect of decreasing, resistance to air penetration, or that may artificially

accelerate propulsion, such as a protective screen, fuselage form fairing or the like, is

prohibited; (DSQ)

© Except as otherwise determined by the Event Director in the interest of safety, the front

wheel may be of a different diameter than the rear wheel;

(d) Handlebars and stem must be fashioned to prevent any danger. All handlebar ends must

be solidly plugged to lessen the possibility of injury; (Stop‐and‐Go Time Penalty, DSQ if not

remedied promptly)

(e) There must be one working brake on each of the two wheels; (DSQ)

(f) There must be a free‐wheeling mechanism between the crank and the rear wheel that

allows the bicycle to roll forward while the pedals remain stationary; (DSQ)

(g) All aspects of the bicycle must be safe to the rider and to other athletes in the Race.

Minimum safety standards include, but are not limited to, properly glued and sealed tires,

tight headset and handlebars, and true wheels; and

(h) Non‐traditional or unusual bikes or equipment are illegal unless, prior to the start of the

Race, approval has been granted from the Event‐specific Head Referee. (DSQ)

You are allowed to use a MTB. Did Bela Bela 5150 on my MTB last year.

Fantastic... Thank you  :clap:

I have however fitted slicks to the MTB. Made a massive improvement on the road.

This will be my first 5150, do you guys know if there are cutoff times on the bike leg and what they are?

I'm worried that I'm at quite a disadvantage to the road bikes on my mountain bike. Doing 40km's now in 1hr45. Hoping they won't cut me off.

Ill make some time back up on the run.

You won't get cut off.

The start groups at Bela Bela are far apart so the early starts are almost finished before the last guys go off.

The toughest time is for the ladies who start last.

for some reason i cant view the live chat about Bela Bela.

Please could someone be so kind enough to post the chat on here after its done.

Thanks!

What sort of disadvantage are we looking at time wise? 15mins or so?

I currently do 40km's in 1hr43, with an elevation of 280m, I see total elevation for this stage at bela bela is 350 odd meters, so i shouldn't be too far off that time.

I know I shouldn't be nervous about going with my mountain bike, but I kinda am...

Not sure about the time difference on mtb vs road, but at bela bela it should not be that major. Dont stress about cut off times, 1h45 is totally respectable, and there are A LOT of people that are just out for fun and completing the event. Just lock the shocks and up the air pressure and you will be fine.

Hi guys. Read the Athlete Race info guide here; http://www.ironman.com/~/media/bd1ca6bfc7ff40f38b63d9ea8570f5db/5150%20bela%20bela%20athlete%20info%20guide%202015%20version%201.pdf

There is no cut-off times only closure times; Swim 15:15. Bike 17:00. Finish line 18:00. Just look at the info guide for your wave start time, to see how much time you wil have.

And, TYWALK, on the live chat they mostly talked about information found in the guide. And that the average water temperature that time of the year at Bela Bela is between 17-19 (and the air temperature about 25), which translates to wetsuits being optional.

They also mentioned that they moved the buoys in the water to force people to the centre in the swim around the corners to keep people from walking. And a few minor things like draughting, use of headphones, aid stations and that there would be about a thousend entries. If you still want to see the chat and have troubles opening it, try using another browser. Chrome worked for me.
