Cape cyclist’s 1 600km trip for the elderly

http://www.iol.co.za/lifestyle/a-journey-of-love-and-acceptance-1679357

Cape rider David Kleynhans will ride from his home in Welgemoed in Cape Town to Durban, covering the 1 600km trip in seven days, arriving in Durban in time to start the 105km aQuellé Tour Durban road race on April 28, after which he will ride home again.

While the 42-year-old is very fit, the trip is more about raising money and drawing attention to the difficulties facing the elderly through his FRAIL charity.

“This will be my first aQuellé Tour Durban,” said Kleynhans, who has worked all over the world in the hospitality industry.

“After I started to cycle I saw the need to support others. Over the last 10 years, I have done one or two tours a year, sometimes three tours in a year,” Kleynhans said.

He grew up in the Eastern Cape before moving to Cape Town as a teenager. He spent time in the care of the elderly and was moved by their plight.

“Through family I was shown the heartache that some seniors have to live with,” says Kleynhans. “I was shown love, and now I wish to share it with our seniors who cared for me when I was a toddler.

“I am able to care for myself, but who cares for those less fortunate to have any family members?” he added.

Kleynhans’ FRAIL (Friendship, Relatives, Acceptance, Involvement, Love) programme will benefit from his fund-raising programme that will be driven by sponsorships and the sale of raffle tickets.

“I am asking people to sponsor me four cents per kilometre – that’s R65 one way,” said Kleynhans. “Every R65 sponsorship will get an entry into the raffle.”

Cyclist dons Santa beard for the elderly

David Kleynhans, regularly undertakes cycling tours to raise funds and awareness for the plight of the elderly.
KNYSNA NEWS - A Milnerton waiter, David Kleynhans who regularly saves his earnings to take on cycling tours to benefit various old-age homes, cycled through Knysna on Tuesday, February 4 on his way back to Cape Town from Port Elizabeth.

"I'm using my bicycle as my messenger," says Kleynhans, "to gather support for those who nurtured me and to give back to those who gave to me."

Kleynhans, who has a blood disorder and thrombosis in one leg, is cycling in support of FRAIL (Friendship, Relatives, Acceptance, Involvement, Love), an organisation that cares for the aged. His latest expedition has been labelled 'The Great Trek' and as part of his fundraising journey he completed the Herald Cycle Tour in Port Elizabeth. On route he is accommodated by people who read about his vision on the cycling website, The Hub SA.

Kleynhans cycled to Heidelberg on Wednesday, February 5, followed by the final 280km stretch to Cape Town. For this trip he had to get permission to take ten days off work.

"I like the restaurant business because you work flexi-time and when I need to take off or get ready for a big race, I'm able to do that."
He says the cycling from Heidelberg back to Cape Town was the toughest part because there are so many mountains.

"I wear this Santa-beard as a gesture to elderly person - letting them know that I have empathy with them and that I want to share my love with those who have been forgotten. I have had such a fantastic upbringing and I look at every elderly person as someone who helped a younger person become who they are in life today. This is my way of saying thank you." (He grew up in Cradock and Durbanville.)

Locally, Kleynhans has visited Vermont Old Age Home for almost ten years whenever he visits Knysna to participate in the cycling race during the Knysna Oyster Festival.

"It's my favourite race!" he smiles. "Its not to far and it offers a really nice package deal for the cyclists."
According to Kleynhans, his desire to do something for the elderly came into focus as he cycled through the country and found that old people were often neglected and disowned by their communities.

"I was hurt, sad and felt bitterly out of place by their ordeal, hence this initiative."
Having started cycling ten years ago in 2004, Kleynhans is an accomplished cyclist who is using his talent to raise both funds and awareness for the elderly.

The 42-year-old also disclosed that, despite not having a family of his own, he has vowed to live a lifestyle of compassion and caring for senior citizens.

"My life resonates around giving back to the community and offering services to the needy in my neighbourhood. For me this fills me, and whenever I ride past the smiling elders of my community I pray that this could be a continuous gesture. My cycling profession has taught me to share, smile and appreciate the little things which people tend to overlook."

Kleynhans has participated in cycling events and worked in Bermuda and the Mediterranean as a barman and chef. When busying himself with fundraising tours, he averages between 11 and 15 hours in the saddle per day. For more information contact David Kleynhans, donate to FRAIL at Nedbank account number 1045781584, branch code 19262100.
