Good big and slash out, that way she can never moan when you upgrade your bike. My wife started with an entry level hardtail and went through three upgrades in a year until settled on suitably spec'd softail.

My wife has a Titan Calypso ladies bike great bike for her however my advice would be don't get a ladies specific bike so when you sell it your market isn't limited to woman only will make it easier to move again.

So no real difference then between ladies specific bike & other?

My wife tried ladies specific bikes and she said she didn't notice a difference. Got her a male specific Merida 1000 lite end of last year for 7k.

Was in the exact same boat a year ago.

Bought my wife the Silverback Sola 4 and in Feb bought her a R30k bike. (More expensive than my own)

Selling it on the hub and it has all your wife needs to start out. (tubeless tyres, an Air shock to pump according to her weight, a ladies specific gel saddle, expensive pedals where one side is flat and the other clips in while she's learning)

If she takes to it in a year's time you'll get most of your money back, unlike me! :)

Got my wife a Silverback Sola 4 last year March (2014 model obviously). Her previous bike was a 26" lady specific one which was really not that great.

I made a couple of changes for her comfort which was:

1. WTB Speed She Saddle (wider and softer than the stock saddle, and the much shorter nose also helps in a way)

2. Shortened the Handlebar by 20mm a side (to fit with her narrow shoulders)

3. Swapped the grips with Spez Body Geometry grips for small hands.
