SRAM X0 shifting problem

From basically new my rear derailleur will not change from 2nd to 3rd. Absolutely no problem from 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 4th etc. Changing back from 3rd to 2nd also no problem. This happens on both front chain rings. Had the bike serviced recently and mentioned problem to the bike shop. Was OKish on first ride but exact same problem is back again. Anyone else with same problem?

Could be a number of causes.

1) Most often a kink or fault in the cable or housing.

2) The derailleur hangar is not 100% straight

3) the derailleur itself is faulty (a pivot or spring not gliding smoothly)

4) the pulley wheels are not 100%

5) Very long shot at the B limit screw.

Hope this helps.

Im leaning towards option number 5

Thanks, but surely the bike shop should have picked this up. As mentioned I've had this problem basically from new.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

You'll be suprised.

I don't like swearing at other people and raising my blood pressure which is why I do everything myself except for a fork service.

Not all bike shops are k@k,

@ David, in all the possibilities you mentioned why does this not happen in all the shifting. Why only from 2nd to 3rd?

If it's the first option (which I also think is most likely) the kink in the cable is probably at the exact point to cause issues in that gear range, and at any other time it's either in the casing or out of it, which means it doesn't foul. That would be my guess. You'd be surprised how a seemingly tiny crimp in the cable can mess up a shift on ONE gear.

Doesn't affect the upward change cos of the pressure on the cable (your thumb overcomes the resistance presented by the kink) but on the downshift it relies on cable slack to allow it to shift. If it's kinked, it's just enough of a kink to prevent the derailleur spring from moving it such a short distance... when you change multiple gears, the momentum and spring tension combined are enough to overcome the resistance of the kink...
