My steering feels "gritty"

My advice, it may not be budget friendly but if you plan to keep your bike for a long time buy one of the following:

1. Chris King headset (My personal choice) - Replacement bearings are available but they last a loooooong time!

2. Cane Creek (Had these previously) These also last a looooong time if you get higher in the range.

The resale value on a Chris King is also something to keep in mind. You can easily sell them if you do change frames.

I phoned my LBS. They have the bearing kit for R430. Seems like something that needs to be done once a year. So I'll just keep it in mind.

Thanks guys...I'll look into the Chris King option as well.

Yeah, once a year is silly, buy once... ever.

What is the difference with a CK headset and any other? The thing that goes is the bearings.

Does CK use SS bearings?

My headset lasted 4 years, Just open it every now and again ad clean the headset out and check the bearings. I put a THIN film of waterproof grease on the outside of the bearing to stop rust on the outside. And sometimes I remove the rubbers seals and put new grease in.

I had a CK headset in my niner a while ago. Their design ito seals and fit are miles ahead of any other. Their bearings are also a higher grade. I believe their bottom bracket's bearings are serviceable(as in not throw away bearings but rather clean and regrease)

You can also service their headset bearings without having to replace.

My one headset is about 6 yrs old with original bearings and still feels brand new...

They the OP could just get the bearings from CK and not the whole headset?

I don't think they will fit, they have a taper on both sides. Best would be to just buy a headset.

Yep, you can get the bearings individually. FSA, Cane Creek, Hope, Chris King (in order of price)

I think he was asking if you can fit for example a CK headset bearing into and onto and existing EG FSA headset cups and baseplate...

Yeah, you guys supplied me with FSA headset bearings. Price wasn't as bad as I anticipated.

As Nerd said dont think they will fit, they are specific to the CK cups I suspect, Also the seals I was referring to were in the cups not the bearings. For the system to work, you really need the whole enchilada

There is nothing wrong with any other brand of headset, but...

I am over having to buy things that shouldn't be a consumable, like headsets.

So if you just want a headset... cool.

If you want a headset that lasts forever, get a good one.

But the headset is just the split washer and the top cover plate thing and two bearings. Why would it not fit?

What "cups" are you referring to?
