Upgrade from solid to suspension on the front?

I've got a 10 year old Marvel 26" that CWC brought in for the security patrols years ago with no suspension on the front, looking to either upgrade the front to suspension, or get a new bike. There is nothing wrong with my bike, it has not been used that much, mostly for road use cycling from work for a while years ago and to the local park with the kids at the moment. The kids are getting MTBs to ride some of the beautiful trails on the nearby winefarms so I thought its a good time to get suspension on my bike.

My bike has V brakes, what options do I have in terms of suspension on my bike? I was thinking about spending around R1k, is it realistic? Bear in mind I'm not a serious off road ride, it's more to ride with the kids at this stage.

I almost bought a second-hand 26" Suntour XCM here on the hub that can take v-brake for around R800 to fit on my wife's bike, but somebody beat me to it. Guessing you won't find a new one for that price.

As long as the steerer fits your frame, you're good to go. You'll probably have to shop around though. They are not that common these days.

Or, just get a new bike. Flog the old one to help financing.

Sure there are a whole heap of these lying in garages around the country, I have 3 under the workbench in the garage, pity you're not up in the big smoke.

As Rickus says, measure your current "steering tube" [more commonly called a steerer] (From the crown - where it goes into the frame - to the top of the cap should be close enough), if one of the ones i have lying around will fit its yours for the cost of shipping and a beer.

not worth the effort if its a nice enough bike and does what you need it too just ride it and enjoy

its unlikely you will find a front shok that will fit your frame not impossible but highly unlikely

if you want to spend money buy another more advanced used bike or just ride the one you have

maybe turn it into a SS instead

Thank you so much for the offer! I've measured the steerer, length seems to be about 165/170mm, outside diameter looks like 28mm.

Just to add: the steerer on my bike is still the threaded type, so I guess it will be shorter than the threadless.

Sorry, missed your reply for some reason.

Yeah, with a threaded steerer I doubt you're going to find a suspension fork that will work, you will end up changing more components than its worth.

I'd suggest doing what i did and start monitoring the classifieds here for a frame, fork, wheels etc and then slowly build up a bike, often some awesome deals to be had and I wont be surprised if you can't build up a 26er with Deore / SLX components and decent wheels for under 3K

Thanks, once I realised the fundamental difference I thought it might become an much bigger excercise than anticipated.

I swopped my slick tyres out for MTB tyres over the weekend, and that in itself has brought about a softer ride due to the bigger sidewalls, I can at least keep up with the kids at this stage, but it would be nice to get something better once I would like to start riding more advanced/longer routes.

Thanks again for all the advice.
