Tinkoff have taken up the chase at the front of the peloton – they want to ensure Peter Sagan is well-placed in the final kilometres. Tony Martin and Julian Alaphilippe have worked tirelessly to keep the pace high and maintain their advantage but it is now only around 65sec, with 33km remaining.

31km to go and the gap to the break is now less than a minute. Tony Martin is suffering out there and who can blame him. He's made the pace so hard for the rest of the bunch though  - although I'm not sure that's going to make him too many friends ahead of tomorrow's rest day.

Alaphilippe and Martin have 53" of a lead, and are about to approach the only categorised climb of the day. It's only a Cat.4, the Cote de Muhleberg. 1.2km at 4.8% Not too much of a problem for anybody.

Interestingly AG2R are starting to organise themselves on the front, just to the left of the sprinters' trains. Is that to set up Bardet for the hilly finale or are they just looking to protect their team leader ahead of a tense finale.

Fabian Cancellara sounding happy to be going home, and has just described the finish in immaculate detail. I fancy he could do the finish blindfolded and you could still make a case for him winning. It'd be great to see him take the victory. He says there is an 80% chance of a break winning. I'll give him 0% right now. 27km to go, the Etixx pair have just 37"

Alaphiippe is spent, and as soon as he gets to the foot of the hill he has cracked. Tony Martin having to go it alone up this climb. 25km to go, and a 30" lead.

Martin takes on a bottle from the side of the road, takes one swig and then tosses it aside for a fan to pick up. It's almost all over but the Etixx rider once more drops down into his TT position and goes as aero as possible.

Rui Costa having a role of the dice here for Lampre, and has perhaps a 5 second gap to the peloton. I think we'll see a lot of these mini-attacks that go and are quickly reeled in. 20KM TO GO

Rui Costa has got about 15" on the peloton here. No great panic from the top teams, but still, it's a mild concern that he's able to get away so easily. 18km to go.
