scuzzy Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 Hi All Does anybody have a solution for transporting a bike when I travel with my trailer? My primary means of transporting the bike will be on a towbar, but once the trailer is hooked for the holiday, I won't be able to make use of the Thule Express type bike racks. I think to get the bike onto the trailer lid is quite expensive, so thinking about alternatives. At the moment my 2 options are: 1. Fitting a towball onto the trailer and keep using my Thule express2. Get the old school Holdfast type bike racks that you fit to the towbar plate and can still hook the trailer Anybody done smomething similar, or have a good idea? Regards
JXV Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Built my trailer with a longer than normal A-frame up front. This leaves room to bolt a roofrack style bike carrier or two transversely across the A frame between car and trailer. Made sure there is enough clearance for tight turns and for opening the rear door of my wagon with bikes loaded. The longer Aframe tows better and easier to reverse too. If trailer mods are not an option then mounting the bikes on the trailer lid works ok. A friend fitted brackets and a towball on his lid that allow him to fit his Thulu bike carrier on top of the trailer and mount bikes on it.
PhilipV Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Look at the holdfast top runner,, it's specifically designed for trailers and probably cheaper than you expect. Putting a towball and a rack at the back will move the trailers centre of gravity back and can lead to dangerous trailer sway if you don't pack your trailer correctly. The safest option is to put the bicycles on the trailer roof.
