go for the Victory 30 Tubeless. Very nice wheelset at a superb price.

All of the boutique wheelsets have a major issue that you need to live with.

Mavic have the mysterious tightening pre load adjuster on their hubs

American Classis have one or two wheelsets with spoke issue, possibly due to the rim being too light

NoTubes Alpha 300 are weak and don't last.

Best boutique wheelsets are either Campagnolo or Shimano in the lower price ranges. Once you get to R15k, you're spoiled for choice.

But in the lower price range American Classic Victory 30 is about as solid as you get.

If you buy AMC, just make sure it have the spline rear hub, the other hubs does not last

The Argent is a nice light wheel, but it is not as strong as the 420 Aero 3. My friend had his wheel replaced 3 times, and then desided to upgrade to the carbon 40. They kept cracking at the eyelets. I recently upgraded from the lighter sprint 350 to the 420 Aero 3 and the 420 aero 3 are much beter. If you really want to upgrade, go for the carbon 40. They cost about R17 000 at Evobikes.

On special today for R15295-50...

What do you mean by this? Which "spline" do you refer to?

The spline hub is a different hub, used in some of the wheels. You can go on the AMC site and have a look. The drive side flange is higer than the non drive side. The non spline hubs have the same hight. There is a differance in the bearings as well.

Ok i think you're refering to the new 6 pawl hub design. With more engagements points they tend to not strip the pawls like the older hubs did.

Also the new freehubs have the steel inserts on the splines to prevent the cassette sprocket clusters from eating away at the splines.

I've ridden those (not the tubeless version) and they were a bit flexy for my liking even though they are rated to 118kgs (and I'm 'only' 84kegs).

Shame the Argents seem to have issue and even more of a shame that Evo don't have stock on the Aeros as I wanted to buy local. Will have to go off shore now and hunt down a pair.

I get the carbon thing but I"m never so sure how much I need a deep section carbon seems to be a lot of show and a little performance until you get up to Firecrest level. If I was TT'ing or a tri-guy then maybe but the braking issue always seems to be there, the wind in CT, always see guys flailing about CT when it blows, rims overheating and damaging the track to wet performance and damage etc it always seems a hack.

any low spoke count wheelset is going to have flex issues. If you want stiff wheels then go for 24H front 28H rear custom set on Chris Kings, Campag or Shimano Ultegra or Dura Ace hubs. The flanges are stiff on those so you can increase spoke tension.

But for stiff wheels ultimately you need stiff spokes. Light rims will always have a issue if they don't have eyelets

For sure. I'm just saying that I've not had too many issues with the Aeros in that department but have with the Victory and Sprint range.

Does any one have any longer term reviews on the Am Argent wheels? about to pull the trigger on some just wondering .....

Didn't opt for the Argents but now have a set of AMC Aero 420's tubeless 2016's (19 odd internal) and Victory 30s.

Both, rock solid. Both tubeless. Aeros have (and always) had great hubs. Victorys have lesser hubs but still good, good width and newer 117kg weight that keeps them stiff and fresh for a 74kg rider. Tubeless ready and rolling 23c schwalbe pro 1's... fast and fat with the extra internal width. Actually look like cyclocross tyres.

Run between 85ps / 90psi currently and happy with the feel and speed.
