Mixing SRAM groupset components

Hi guys, I have a SRAM XX groupset fitted on my bike which is a 2x10. I recently ground my largest chainring on a rock and damaged it. I saw that the larger chain ring can be detatched from the smaller one, therefore making it a 1x10 setup. I would love to do this as I have no need for the larger chainring and it can save me a bit of weight and ground clearance, but the crank arm cannot be bolted on to the small chainring due to it being too big. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/01/561ed8f795032905b36dd219483d7e1a.jpg

I found an XX1 crank arm on Chain Reaction Cycles which looks like it is small enough for fitment onto the small chainring. I would just like some clarity on whether this would work? http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/01/9a129bf908d9ad230d42ee48fd7815eb.jpg

If not, is there any other way of making the XX groupset into a 1x10?

Thanks.

OK, first off, your small ring wont fit the XX1 crank, totally different bolt pattern and Bolt circle diameter (BCD). I also do not understand what you want to bolt your small ring to on your current crank, you just leave it where it is. If you want to go 1x, you will have to get a narrow wide ring that fits a 120 BCD. I think the smallest that work on this BCD is 36 tooth. This will be a lot cheaper than buying a whole new crank! (Less that R1000)

If you want an even smaller ring, rather look out for a second hand XO crank and buy a 30 tooth or 28 tooth blade that fits 104 BCD or get a direct mount ring.

Why not just take off the big ring?  The spider might stick out a bit, but at least it won't cost you anything.

Try it out and see.  No harm in trying.

If you're going to take off the FD then I'd recommend getting a narrow wide.  And don't forget to shorten your chain.

I'd rather keep it nice and tidy, but if all else fails, I will do that. Thanks!

In that case, would I be able to just take off my smaller chainring and be left with the bigger 42t if I wanted?

Yes, you just take these off. Email janos@evobikes.co.za and he may be able to help you. There are a few aftermarket makers.
