Conversion from 2x10 to 2x11

I am thinking of fitting a complete XT M8000 2x11 groupset to my 2015 Trance 27.5 2, which has a standard 2x10 Deore/SLX mix.

Are there any reasons why the conversion would not be viable, or would be problematic?

I am thinking mainly of the 10 to 11 cassette, but any other advice would also be appreciated.

Gert

To me it's a waste, can't you cope with the gearing you have now?As far as I know your 10x front derailleur won't work with the 11x setup due to the bigger granny gear in the rear but I could be wrong. I also have a 2x10 setup now but I am converting to 1x11 with the upgrade kit.

I'm using my original 2x10 crank front derailleur and shifter with the 11 speed upgrade kit without hassles

What size cassette do you have on the rear?

Ok cool as I

Xt 11 speed with a 42

Ok cool as I said I might be wrong,I am trying to understand why he needs more gearing and If he is taking strain with what he has. To me if you can't get up a hill with a 2x10 setup then it is hellish steep and then you might as well just walk.

Some have had chainline issues because the big cog on the new 11 spd XT cassette is dished slightly towards the spokes. i.e. it sits slightly inboard compared to the big cog on the 10spd cassette.

So it might just fit and work well or it might need a bb spacer to be moved across to the non drive side. Depends on frame design and how the crank was installed.

Thanks JXV, that is my main concern. I read somewhere that a guy who wanted to do the conversion, had to swop out the whole rear triangle of his bike for one designed around the 11x cassette. If that would be necessary, it would just not be worth my while.

It's frame dependent but a lot of bikes have a spacer between the frame and BB on the drive side.

If you have chainline issues with the big rear cog being too far inboard you can move this spacer to the non-drive side. This keeps the correct BB width but moves your crank inboard a mm or two.

If you are doing a 1x conversion you can also fit spacer washers between the crank spider and your front chainring. This may not work for all chainring/bcd/crank combinations and it may not work for a 2x system but is one of the techniques that can be used to shift your chainline.

Another concern: the Shimano 11-speed front mechs are mostly side swing / front pull and may require re-routing the shift cable. For my bike (low direct mount / top pull) there is no suitable Shimano 11 speed front mech other than a front pull with the cable zip-tied down the bottom tube.

Surely the front deraiuller is independent of the back cassette. I can't see what the reach mech and trigger has to do with the front mech. Surely if im running a 1 x 11 i cak simply remove my front amd re fit the 2 x sproclets bacl a sit used to be. Currently rumning a 34 in front thinking of adding a 24 or 26 with a new derrailuler
