To all the Hubbers may you have a prosperous 2016 fulfilled with excitement on your machines...

I do have two issues on my MTB that I need some advice:

1. Replaced the rear brake pads on my MTB now if I gently brake there is this screeching sound that is worses than a cars brakes that is screeching. When braking hard there is no sound. Tried a downhill few times also with some hard braking in order to bed in the pads...did not work.... Any advice...

2. Replaced the shifter cables with new housings etc. The problem is now when I want to shift up it feels that there is no cable because there is nothing and immediately try shifting again it shifts without any issues. If you **** up again all is fine but as soon as you are riding for a while in a gear and need to shift up the same happens. Down shifting is fine. Checked to the cable tension and it seems fine. SLX shifters 10spd...Any advice...

Sounds like the brake pads have oil on them. Clean the disks with Meths and let them dry, maybe sandpaper the pads a little. If that doesn't work then get new pads. You should also never clean the brakes or disks with paraffin, just use soap and water.

With the shifters it sounds like there is a problem inside the shifter mechanism on the handle bar side. If you are feeling nothing when you shift up, then some gears or cogs inside are not engaging. If there is an opening to the shifter spray a lot of Q20 inside and let the excess drip out, it may remove the dirt. Don't let the Q20 drip anywhere on the brake disks. It could be that part of the shifter is broken and you need a new shifter in front.

Caliper alignment? - Loosen the mounting bolts, pull the brake lever then tighten the bolts whilst holding the lever in the operated position.

This should align the calipers with the discs.

Is the cable the correct length? Also, check it's not catching on any any of the support stays and is moving freely through the housing sections.

I had a similar problem with XT shifters. It might be worth checking the 2/3 chainring setting on the shifter. Mine had been set to 3 chainring when I run a 2x10 setup.

There should be a little button/lever under the shifter. You can also try disassembling the shifter (just unscrew the little screws while holding it tight) to see if anything is broken or has come loose inside. I did this successfully on my XT. I assume SLX will be similar.

But as above, it's more likely catching due to too much friction somewhere - check the cable housing ends too to make sure they're in the groove properly.

1. Did you re-align the caliper to the disc when you changed the pads. Pads often don't wear exactly parallel to their backing plates and the calipers are often removed and replaced during maint procedures like fork lowers services at which time they would be realigned to the worn pads.....

Cleaning the discs , properly with acetone and clean dry paper towels can help.

The discs may also be worn beyond limits....sometimes they wear more an the outer periphery than the inner edge of the contact area.

2)there is probably some free play somewhere. Check any cable ends are properly pushed onto cable casings and also properly inserted into the frame. Check that cable casings are not too short or movement restricted when the steering or suspension flexes . Check for wear/freeplay on the derailers.
