Ja, but I'm thinking if you want the extra speed, add a bigger blade in front. Then you have the speed as well as the granny. Although that will be far more expensive because a new crank is then required.

I have a second wheel set i want to put the road cassette on

so its an easy swop for me

one wheel set - knobbies + mtb cassette

one wheel set - semi slicks + road cassette

Im busy selling my road bike and sorting myself out to use my MTB for both worlds...

I've been thinking about why ... I mean the only thing you would do is 'lose' a few of the easier gears and a few grams? Any 'logical' reason I have missed ....

In the case of my bike it is a 'MonsterCross' that I built purely out of bits and pieces out of my spares boxes and so that is how it came together. It is used primarily for gravel grinding when we go camping so not in anything technical and for sure not for trying to show up any 'real' mountain bikers in singletrack or on big climbs

he probably wants to use these wheels on the road whilst having another set of wheels for the mountain with a low range cassette

thats what he said... :)
