I wouldn't say abnormal, Just because I haven't seen it before doesn't mean its rare. You say its a morewood, They usually DH and trail bikes? maybe a standard skewer system isn't strong enough for the extra stresses the a DH bike goes through.

12mm thru axles have been around for a loooooong time. Used to be only DH bikes that used them, but about 10 or so years ago they started coming out on other bikes as well. 

 

This particular bike is a Sukuma, which is a 150mm travel "All Mountain" bike. Even XC bikes now have 12mm thru axxles at the rear. All in the name of stiffness. The 12mm interface can impart a lot more stiffness than the normal 5mm QR POS's.

In another incident, One oke had left his bike in one of the pause areas, and came back to find it missing his thru axle at the rear. Had to magafter a 12mm threaded rod (bolt) with a ny-lock nut to get it running again. 

 

Wow that caused a bit of a short circuit! Never seen the word written before.
