hey guys, don't you think that it is a bit unfair that for the Giants Castle this year there was absolutely no prize money? (i don't know if this is the case every year)

Let me set the scene:

A rider enters and pays a R300 entry. (very steep, even though it is a stunning route)

He then has to raise a minimum personal sponsorship of R300.

This means that for those of us that are too busy to go around asking everybody for sponsorship you end up paying R600 to do one race of 75km!!

At the end of this Giants this year (yesterday) the event managed to raise R280 000 (!!!!) for Emverlo Wildlife or something like that.

Then at the end of the race the winner get some discount to a resort or something, and the 2nd anr 3rd place finishers barely get a mention!!

Couldn't the spare even 5k for the top 5 finishers?  This is an extreme endurance event, and this year i trained really hard, raced my best, got 2nd overall and i got abosolutly nothing except a mention after waiting 3 hours for a prize-giving which started (yes started) at 16h30!!!!!

this is were the commission or CSA needs to step in and set the boundries to the race organisers. however if you enter the race knowing this in advance you have to accept the fate.

well done on a good finish and a great race.

sorry for you mate

this event is a fund raising event for Wildlands Conservation Trust - you knew that when you entered and you can see under the awards section of the website that there is no prize money (it's probably why you don't see more of the top riders there)

if you don't have the time to raise sponsorship don't moan that you have to fork this over out of your own pocket.

I entered the race last year so that left me plenty of time to raise a measly R300.

I think that we should be grateful that we are allowed to ride there in the first place - remember it is a World Heritage Site and mountain biking is not allowed there at all, with the exception of the race

congrats on your ride though - tough course so well done

Confused

99.9999% of events have beneficiaries of some sort or another.Goodie!

However,to not have a cash prize for at least the top 3 finishers is a poor show.Selfish comes to mind.Who wants a discount on a weekend in some forgotten corner of the bergDead

I guess, if the organisers made it known ahead of time no prize money would be awarded, its rather a difficult point to raise now.

...........but this is not unusual, even in some of the races locally, there is only prizes for the first three over the line and no age cat prizes (ie) Vets.

Personally, I think a relevant prize should be awarded to all the top three place finishers in all cats, this need not be of huge monetary value, just relevant, I mean most cyclists would happily accept a set of  cycling clothing as a prize, but a "moon bag and a toaster" is going to be frowned upon. !!
