Are there any affordable ones available?

Got a shock when I heard the price of a good and decent brand. Was over R2.5K before discount.

Any in the R1k to R1.5K range?

Yeah not cheap.

I paid over 2k for my pack. Ex the water bag. Evoc Enduro Blackline. I have to say tho. Even though it's by far the biggest pack I've ever had it feels "weightless" Any you can take out the back protector bit if you are doing a long XC style ride.

Don't like the price tag but the features are nice!

I got my Evoc FR Enduro Team about 3 years ago. Paid about R1400, excl bladder.

Whilst it is huge, like Duane said, it is comfy. That said, I have a couple of other smaller Evoc packs (cc 3L and cc 6L), which don't have back protection, and generally I ride with those, so the FR Enduro hasn't seen use in a while.

Oh, except for commuting. At 16L it can fit a laptop and a change of clothes.

The way I see it, my 3l Dakine drafter backpack( which I bought on sale at R499) has a built in air-bag albeit it is filled with water most times.

Biggest thing with packs is what you keep in them.

Keys, tools, etc can be very dangerous if you fall. Being stabbed with a key would be really unpleasant!!!

And then on this page there are two adds from CamelBack for pack. Seems to be the M.U.L.E. NV and H.A.W.G. NV.

Now to find the price for them.

My 2013 Sani2C partner will tell you that the Evoc protection packs are excessively big.

(I was down with a stomach bug from night 1, and was surviving on a couple of bananas, water, and flat coke. Because I was so weak, on the latter half of day 3 she suggested we swop hydration packs because hers was lighter. When we did she proceeded to give me a piece of her mind on how oversized my backpack was

I have a dakine nomad with 3l bladder, bout on sale for under 1k.. about just over a year ago.

Had light back protection and fits all my goodies and pumps and goggles etc...

If I was to get another pack I think the new leatt looks like a good investment. I like how it gets fastened to the body.

The Leatt and Evoc both meet CE EN1621-2 Level 1 back protection standard,

This means that with an impact of 50 joules a residual force of 18kN or less is experienced.

(with Level 2 that force needs to be 9kN or less)

I'm not sure what the Leatt's figures are, but the Evoc is around 10kN, so it is almost categorized as a Level 2.
