Die Burger is very up to date with the cycling and our Leagues has no problem with the exposure there. Usually a big article about the cycling before every weekend and sometimes on the Monday to give the feedback of the racing.

Just a pity that the Soutie(English) papers is a bit behind....

Ja, agreed Die Burger (Eunice) has done a lot for local (league) cycling in recent years.....

The Argus-guy told me last week their English speaking readers in WP don't really care much about cycling - that I couldn't believe Confused

what did you expect from a soutie? Rugby is more a Afrikaner sport but they love to put rugga in?

if you want cycling coverage ' date=' get to know the sports editor / reporters at the newspaper and ask if you write the report yourself will they publish it. 9/10 they will if it is recent news and topical. how do you think the Argus is able to get reports on most club and school cricket / soccer and rugby matches.  [/quote']

I'm not sure if I'm out of line here, but why must we (general public) write and supply the media with news and results.  isn't their job as reporters to go and search for info....or to stay in touch with what is happening in their areas?  or don't reporters do that any more, or is that only in the movies?

Why can't reporters ask to be on clubs mailing lists or to recieve their weekly newsletters etc to get the relevant info....

having worked as a reporter, it is generally difficult to track down these things. plus, as i pointed out earlier, newsrooms are becmoing smaller and smaller, and journalists are getting paid less and less to do more work. it would be much easier if clubs/organisations have a dedicated communications officer to dessiminate the info to as many media outlets as possible.

my 2 cents. We contacted the argus for our event and they inserted an article under "preview of weekend sport". we had to email or fax the info to them by the Wednesday afternoon. one of our afrikaans speaking members contacted the Burger and spoke with Hubert and they did the same thing. if you want the race report and results in the argus you have to have it with them by the Sunday night as they have a section in the Tuesday edition devoted to small sports like cycling (normally they always do a report on the PPA league or Gauteng/oseas cycling).

imo the sports reporter go and look for stories concerning big sports rugby, soccer , cricket but only have time for cycling when it is "Argus Time".

Here's how it works in SA:

The mainstream media cover events or sports that are the most popular. They even dedicate one or two staff members to cover those sports specifically, eg rugby, cricket, soccer etc. They do surveys from time to time to see which sports are the most popular among their target market and ensure they are covering the top 10 either every day or regularly.

There is not one mainstream media platform that has a dedicated cycling journalist. You'll find that if there is someone that writes cycling for a newspaper, he/she also covers other smaller or 'Olympic' sports.

'The Argus' race gets decent media coverage because it attracts such a large number of participants and will be of interest to them, their families and their friends, which is quite a decent readership/viewership/listenership.

Most of the cycling media stories are not written by any news media journalists, but by PR companies that have been contracted to the sponsor of an event or team to feed information to the media. This is necessary to help leverage the sponsorship and increase the sponsor's return on investment. It's also necessary because cycling just isn't big enough in this country to warrant a big enough dedicated mainstream media interest.

Also, as Holy Roller pointed out, many mainstream media have downsized their staff complements dramatically in the past decade. There is a lot of syndication these days, especially between media owned by the same group, eg the Independent Group, which may use the same strong rugby story in the Cape Times, Mercury, Pretoria News and The Star on a Monday morning and then a strong soccer story that same afternoon in the Daily News and The Cape Argus...

If cycling wants to raise its media profile, CSA needs to appoint a PR company to manage the flow of relevant information to the right media, at the right time! (news is only news for a day, maximum!).

The Afrikaans newspapers, specifically, Burger and Beeld, cover cycling better than any other mainstream print media in SA.

Dedicated cycling media should be covering the big cycling stories on their websites (much of it dates too much to be in the magazines). Burry's result at the weekend is one of the best performances ever by any South African cyclist. That should have been given exposure on dedicated cycling websites in SA.

very true but also a catch 22 situation, since these big PR companies don't regard cycling as a big enough "client" .... the rugby, cricket, soccer and golf have the BIG names that usually make it worth their while

Also true, thanks to Eunice Visagie and Wilhelm de Swardt
