Good evening all

this year i went and watched the ironman in port elizabeth, (supported my boss doing it). im considering entering the half ironman in east london next year... i am new to triathlons and not quite sure where to start..

i have looked at the equipment needed and its not the cheapest sport out there.. i really dont have the financial means to enter a sport like this but i would really love to do it.. my question is this.. is there any places maybe hiring out bikes that i would be able to use for the event on that day? or would there be any places where you could maybe purchase a bike and pay it off?

would appreciate any help.

Thank You

Triathletes are gadget guys that make this sport expensive. To do the ironman you dont need fancy gear. Basics is wetsuit (that you can hire), road bike (nothing fancy required) with cycling gear and running gear. There is changing rooms at transition to change if you want to. Advice I will also give is to try and lend it from someone to see if you actually like the sport before you buy everything

I started 2 years ago. I already had a road bike and running shoes

The only additional gear I got was

1. A wetsuit

2. Swimming goggles

3. Gym membership (for swimming)

4. Tri shorts (lot more comfy than bibs when you have to run)

The sport can be expensive if you get caught up in the marketing but if you are going to participate as opposed to compete it need not be. A second hand road bike is all that's needed. Rent a wet suit from blu smooth in PE an a pair of takkies. My wife has done tris on a bike we bought second hand for 2k as an example.

Triathlon is a great sport an a healthy life style so go for it.
